Potions and Ingredients
August 23, 2026 at 07:39 AM
Added the published progression framing of potions, the Acting Method and Digestion Progress, confirmed the exchange exists, rewrote the recipe and drop-table hedges as unpublished, and separated Beyonder materials from potion ingredients
Potions are the gating consumable for Sequence advancement. To climb from one Sequence to the next on a Pathway, a Beyonder must drink the Sequence-specific potion of their Pathway. Each potion has a fixed recipe of ingredients drawn from supernatural materials harvested in the world or distilled from defeated enemies. Brewing the potion, drinking it, and surviving its digestion are three separate tests.
This is not a side system. The game has no character classes and no sects, and published copy names what stands in their place: Pathways, Sequences, potions, the Acting Method and Digestion Progress. Advancement means brewing and digesting a potion while playing your Sequence's role convincingly enough for the digestion meter to fill.
The published warning attached to that loop is blunt. Skip the Acting Method and force the advancement anyway, and you are very likely to lose control and become a monster. See Beyonder Monsters.
Component | What it is |
|---|---|
Main ingredient | A unique supernatural material specific to the Sequence and Pathway. Sequence 9 potions typically use a single main ingredient; higher Sequences add a second or third that is significantly rarer. |
Supplementary ingredients | Three to five mystic ingredients (herbs, blood components, rare metals) that round out the formula and stabilise digestion. Sequence 9 supplements are mid-rarity and generally findable in starting-zone dungeons; deeper Sequences need harder content or quest-locked drops. |
Stabiliser | A single common material such as clean water, oil or candle wax, used as the carrier base. |
The public reference for the Sequence 9 Seer potion combines drops of Night Vanilla liquid, Gold Mint leaves, a Poison Hemlock distillate and Dragon Blood Grass powder in a rainwater base. That is the source material's formula; the game's own recipe and quantities have not been published, so treat the list as the shape of a Sequence 9 recipe rather than an in-game ingredient checklist.
Most ingredients drop from supernatural creatures, harvest from named anomaly zones, or sell from Beyonder vendors. Some are quest-locked, unlocking a vendor's recipe only after a story arc completes. Others sit behind faction reputation: the Nighthawks hold back certain higher-Sequence ingredients for characters with rank in the faction.
Community guides to the launch build describe the acquisition channels this way:
Channel | What it covers |
|---|---|
Pathway unlock | Choosing a Pathway immediately opens that Pathway's low-Sequence base recipes and materials. |
Main story | Early recipes arrive automatically as the campaign progresses. |
Region gating | Further material regions are described as opening around Sequence 6. |
Shop exchange | Recipes exchangeable at the Tarot Club shop and at the player's home shop. |
Special conditions | A small set requiring NPC contracts, emotion-state triggers or collection achievements. |
Those channels come from player guides rather than published material, and the specific drop tables, vendor stock lists and gathering locations for individual ingredients have not been published.
Player-to-player trading is not a maybe. The live game runs an exchange where unbound soli buys materials from other players, which is how most people acquire the Echo of History that upgrades sealed artifacts. Ingredients and materials move through the same economy, so a player who does not want to farm a component can usually buy it, and a player who farms well has somewhere to sell.
What has not been published is the detail: listing rules, fees, per-item caps and which ingredient categories are bind-on-pickup rather than tradeable. Bound and unbound currency are tracked separately throughout the game, and that distinction is what decides whether a given stack can reach the exchange at all. See Monetization.
Brewing happens at the player's home alchemical bench or at a partner faction's brewing hall; the Nighthawks' Tingen outpost keeps one for affiliated members. Brewing has been characterised as a small mini-game: timing each ingredient addition, stirring at the right tempo, and reading the steam pattern for signs of failure. A failed brew can ruin the ingredients, most of which are not recoverable, and a successful brew produces a vial that must be drunk within a limited window or it spoils. The brewing interface has not been published step by step, so the description above reflects how the activity has been characterised rather than a documented screen.
Drinking the potion is a story-locked ceremony. The player must:
Requirement | Detail |
|---|---|
Acting threshold | Reach the Acting Method threshold for the current Sequence's Archetype. Digestion Progress is the meter this feeds. |
Sanity | Be at sufficient sanity; some Sequences want the meter full. |
Ritual prop | Hold the right prop for the Pathway's advancement ceremony. See Mysticism and Rituals. |
Location | Be at an appropriate ritual site: a quiet room, the Pathway's affiliated chapel, an open-water sloop. |
Successful digestion grants the new Sequence's abilities and Archetype. Failed digestion deals heavy sanity damage and may regress the Beyonder by a Sequence, and catastrophic failure is the published monsterisation outcome rather than a soft penalty. See Sanity System for the failure-state ladder.
Potion ingredients and Beyonder materials (非凡物质) are easy to confuse and are not the same currency of progress. Ingredients feed the potion that moves a character up the Sequence ladder. Beyonder materials are gear components: gold-tier ones carrying affixes socket into sealed artifacts to raise their stats, they split into attack and defence types, and from the third day of the opening schedule they can be aggregated together to chase better affixes. Farming one does not advance the other.
Some ingredients double as combat consumables. A small dose of Dragon Blood Grass in tincture form temporarily restores sanity in combat, and a single Night Vanilla droplet can stabilise a low-sanity Beyonder ally for one ability cast. The game tracks separate inventory pools for brewing stockpile and combat consumable stockpile, so players do not accidentally burn advancement ingredients on a hard pull.
Tip | Why |
|---|---|
Hoard ingredients across Sequences | Sequence 8 advancement was the first real wall reported by testers during the February 2026 beta, and over-supplying for it was the most common preparation pattern. |
Brew with a partner | A friend with high alchemy skill brews at lower failure rates, which meaningfully lowers ingredient-loss risk. |
Drink at maximum sanity | The advancement potion is the biggest single sanity hit in the game. Entering the ceremony full gives the largest digestion margin. |
Read the recipe before harvesting | Drop rates differ enough that planning the harvest route saves hours of farm time per potion. |
Play the role, do not skip it | Digestion Progress is fed by acting in character. Forcing an advancement without it is the published route to losing control. See Acting Method. |
