The Sleeper

The Sleeper is the ancient entity bound in a temple beneath the Valley of Mines. It communicates with a narrow circle of the Colony's population through dreams and is the main-story antagonist of Gothic 1 Remake. Awakening it is the ultimate goal of the Swamp Camp, and stopping it is the ultimate goal of the campaign.
The Sleeper's contact with the Colony is one-sided and selective. It speaks through dreams to Y'Berion and a handful of others in the Brotherhood of the Sleeper, who interpret its messages as instructions and receive them as religious revelation. It does not broadcast to the wider population.
The Brotherhood believes that fully awakening the Sleeper will break the Barrier and free the Colony's population. They interpret the Sleeper's presence as redemptive rather than threatening, which is what separates them from the other two camps politically.
The necromancer Xardas has studied the Sleeper in isolation since breaking from the Fire Circle. His reading of the evidence is that awakening it would destroy far more than the Barrier. He becomes the Hero's main guide in the late campaign on exactly this point, pushing for a confrontation rather than a release.
The Sleeper's temple is the campaign's final location, guarded by orcs and undead. The Focus Stones that the middle chapters send the Hero after are the key that eventually opens the way into the temple for the final descent.
The Sleeper's visual design is prominent enough in the remake's marketing that its mask is the centrepiece of the Collector's Edition: a 34 x 24 cm wall-mount version, produced as a genuine hard prop rather than a paper cutout. THQ Nordic also used a "Sleeper, Sleeper on the Wall" reveal post on Steam News to announce the Collector's Edition. See Editions and Pre-Order Bonuses.
