Tarandus the Ashen is an Elite Boss in Crimson Desert, encountered during the Odeck Tribe faction quest "The Black Bears and the Red Smoke." He serves as the final obstacle of the quest and is fought at the Odeck Floodgates in the Pailune region. The quest only becomes available after the player has completed enough Pailune faction quests to earn the trust of the Odeck Tribe.
Tarandus is a fast, aggressive humanoid boss who fights with heavy melee strikes. He hits extremely hard and will punish players who overcommit to attacks or attempt to block. The fight itself is not particularly long, but his damage output is severe enough to end a poorly prepared player in just a few hits. The encounter rewards patience, well-timed dodges, and knowledge of his attack patterns.

Tarandus the Ashen possesses the Boss Large Human passive skill, which is a classification shared among the larger humanoid elite bosses in Crimson Desert. This passive affects his behavior patterns, stagger thresholds, and overall combat AI.
Skill | Type | Description |
|---|---|---|
Boss Large Human | Passive | Determines boss behavior patterns, stagger resistance, and combat AI as a large humanoid enemy. |
Tarandus the Ashen is the primary antagonist of the Odeck Tribe faction quest "The Black Bears and the Red Smoke." This quest becomes available after the player has built sufficient reputation with the Pailune faction by completing earlier faction quests in the region. To begin, speak with the quest giver at the Odeck Floodgate.
The quest tasks the player with hunting down remnants of the Black Bears, a hostile group that has taken control of three ancient ruins and established sources of a mysterious red smoke. The player must visit each ruin in sequence, clear out the Black Bears, damage Tarandus enough to force him to retreat (roughly 15% of his health bar at each encounter), and then destroy the red smoke at each location.
The quest progresses through three ruins in the Pailune region. At each ruin, the player encounters groups of Black Bears and must deal enough damage to Tarandus to make him retreat before destroying the red smoke.
Ruin | Direction from Odeck Floodgates | Notes |
|---|---|---|
Volvior Ruins | North (approximately 100 meters) | First ruin. Infested with Black Bears that must be cleared before engaging Tarandus and the red smoke. |
South of Volvior Ruins | Second ruin. More Black Bears and another encounter with Tarandus near the red smoke. | |
West of Volstein Ruins (approximately 480 meters) | Third and final ruin. Heavily guarded with additional Black Bears and one more Tarandus encounter. |
The red smoke at each ruin cannot be destroyed through normal attacks. The game does not explicitly explain the mechanic, which can leave players confused. To destroy the red smoke, use the following sequence:
Step 1: Stab the smoke source using R1+Triangle (PlayStation) or RB+Y (Xbox).
Step 2: Pierce the smoke using R2 (PlayStation) or RT (Xbox). The red liquid will begin to drain.
You can repeat the Stab input multiple times to speed up the draining process.
After all three sources of red smoke have been destroyed, return to the Odeck Floodgates for the final confrontation with Tarandus the Ashen. Unlike the brief skirmishes at the ruins where you only needed to chip away at his health, this is a full fight to the finish.
Tarandus is fast and aggressive in this encounter. He closes distance quickly and chains together powerful melee strikes. The fight is not particularly long, but his damage output means that a few unblocked hits can kill even well-equipped players. Pattern recognition and disciplined dodging are the keys to victory.
Tarandus the Ashen relies on a compact but dangerous set of melee attacks. Each attack hits hard and has deceptive range, so maintaining awareness of his animations is critical.
Attack | Description | How to Counter |
|---|---|---|
Rush Attack | Tarandus charges directly at the player with his weapon extended, covering ground rapidly. This is one of his most frequent openers. | Dodge to the left or right as he closes in. Never dodge backward, as his forward momentum will still carry the strike into you. |
Jump Slam | Tarandus leaps into the air and slams down onto the player's position. The impact zone is large and the tracking is strong. | Begin rolling as soon as you see him leave the ground. Continue rolling to clear the impact radius. Spamming roll is acceptable here since the landing zone is wide. |
Melee Combos | Quick chains of melee swings that come out fast with short recovery windows between them. Less damaging individually, but several hits in succession will drain your health rapidly. | Maintain mid-range distance and wait for the combo to finish before re-engaging. Do not attempt to trade blows during his combo strings. |
The single most important rule for fighting Tarandus the Ashen is to never attempt to parry or block his attacks. Like most human boss enemies in Crimson Desert, his strikes will break through your guard and deal full damage. Dodge is your only reliable defensive option. Always keep enough Stamina in reserve for at least two emergency dodges.
Tarandus has brief recovery windows after finishing his attack chains. These openings are your safest moments to deal damage. Land one or two strikes after he completes a combo, then immediately back off. Getting greedy with extra hits will leave you vulnerable to his next attack sequence.
When you have enough Spirit built up, use the Blinding Flash Finisher (L1+R1+R2 on PlayStation, LB+RB+RT on Xbox) to stun Tarandus and deal significant damage. This is one of the most effective moves in the fight and creates a safe window for follow-up attacks.
The Turning Slash (R1+R2 on PlayStation, RB+RT on Xbox) is another strong option. It deals heavy damage and provides built-in invulnerability frames during the animation, making it both an offensive and defensive tool. Use it when you have a brief opening but are not confident you can safely land a full combo.
If your Spirit gauge is depleted, use Focus during safe moments (when Tarandus is recovering from a combo) to restore it. Having Spirit available for Blinding Flash Finisher and other special moves makes the fight significantly easier.
Bring a generous supply of healing items. Palmar Pills are particularly useful for this fight due to their fast consumption speed. Stock plenty of healing food as well. Expect to need healing frequently, since even a single hit from Tarandus deals substantial damage.
Stamina is your lifeline in this encounter. Every dodge consumes Stamina, and Tarandus forces you to dodge constantly. Make sure your Stamina pool is large enough to handle consecutive dodges, especially during his rush attack into jump slam chains. If your Stamina investment feels low, consider reallocating skill points before the fight.
Equip the best armor available to you. Higher Defense and Damage Reduction stats will make the difference between surviving a hit with some health left and being killed outright. Prioritize defense over offense for this fight.
Never parry or block. Tarandus will break through your guard and deal full damage. Dodge is the only reliable defense.
Dodge sideways against his rush attack. Rolling backward will not create enough distance to avoid the hit.
Spam roll when he uses the jump slam. The impact zone is large, so a single dodge may not be sufficient.
Do not get greedy with counterattacks. One or two hits after his combo ends is the safe limit.
Keep Stamina above 50% at all times so you always have dodge charges available for unexpected attacks.
Use Blinding Flash Finisher whenever Spirit is available. The stun creates the longest safe damage window in the fight.
Turning Slash is a good fallback when your Spirit is low, since it has built-in invulnerability frames.
Bring Palmar Pills and plenty of food. Healing between his combo strings keeps you alive through attrition.
If you are struggling, consider leveling up further or upgrading your armor before reattempting the fight.
Tarandus the Ashen is encountered multiple times during the quest, once at each of the three ruins, before the final battle at the Odeck Floodgates. During the ruin encounters, you only need to deal roughly 15% damage to force him to retreat.
"Tarandus" is the Latin genus name for reindeer and caribou (Rangifer tarandus), though Tarandus the Ashen appears as a humanoid warrior rather than having any obvious connection to the animal.
The quest's red smoke mechanic is unintuitive because the game does not explain that you need to use the Stab and Pierce inputs specifically. Many players spend time attacking the smoke with normal strikes before discovering the correct method.
The Black Bears faction referenced in the quest name are a hostile group that has occupied the ruins around Odeck, not actual bears.
