Moren, the Mistwood Huntmaster is a world boss found in the Wayward Woods north of the Ridgehunter Tannery in the Pailune region. Added in the Version 1.01.00 update, Moren is a mounted huntsman who rides atop an Icicle Edge Alpine Ibex, a white mountain goat, and patrols the misty forests of the area. He wields a one-handed sword paired with a tower shield, making him a well-defended and aggressive opponent.
Players encounter Moren through The Sport Hunter quest, which becomes available as part of the Longleaf Tribe quest line during Chapter 8 of the main story. The fight takes place across two distinct phases. In the first phase, Moren fights alongside several minions in the forest. After taking enough damage, he vanishes into a cloud of mist and flees deeper into the woods, forcing the player to track him down before engaging him again in a harder second phase.
Defeating Moren is required to obtain the Icicle Edge Alpine Ibex Horns, a key crafting material used at the Witch's Lair in Hernand to unlock the Icicle Edge Alpine Ibex as a permanent rideable mount.

Moren is outfitted in a full set of Mistwood gear, a collection of plated armor and weapons that matches his role as a huntmaster of the misty woodlands. His equipment set consists of the following pieces:
Slot | Type | |
|---|---|---|
Claymore | Weapon | |
Mistwood Tower Shield | Off-hand | |
Moren Plate Helm | Head | Helm |
Upper Body | Heavy Armor | |
Mistwood Plate Cloak | Back | |
Hands | Gauntlets | |
Mistwood Plate Boots | Feet | Boots |
The Mistwood set gives Moren high defense values combined with solid stamina, letting him block and counterattack with his tower shield while wearing the player down. His plated armor makes frontal assaults particularly difficult since he can absorb substantial punishment before staggering.
Moren possesses two passive skills that define his behavior in combat:
Skill | Type | Description |
|---|---|---|
Boss Large Human | Passive | Grants Moren the standard large humanoid boss properties, including increased poise, resistance to stagger, and enhanced damage against the player. This skill ensures that he cannot be easily interrupted or stunlocked with light attacks. |
Moren cannot be encountered until several quest conditions are met. Players must first reach Chapter 8 of the main story campaign, which unlocks the Pailune region. After arriving in Pailune, the following objectives must be completed before the Sport Hunter quest becomes available:
Complete the Healing Pailune main quest.
Finish 15 Pailune Militia missions.
Defeat the White Horn Yeti from the Skoghorn Tribe quest line.
Pick up the Concern of the Tannery mission from the Longleaf Tribe quest line.
Accept the bounty notice at the quest location, which triggers The Sport Hunter quest.
Once The Sport Hunter quest is active, Moren's location will be marked on your map. Head to the Wayward Woods area north of the Ridgehunter Tannery. The forest in this area is dense and shrouded in fog, which plays directly into the boss encounter. You may need to use a lantern to navigate the misty terrain effectively. Once you reach the marked area, Moren will be patrolling nearby, mounted on his white Alpine Ibex.
Moren fights with a one-handed sword and tower shield, combining offensive lunges with defensive blocks. His attacks hit hard, and his shield allows him to deflect incoming strikes between his own combos. In Phase 2, his damage output increases noticeably.
Attack | Description | How to Counter |
|---|---|---|
Moren charges directly at the player while mounted on the Alpine Ibex. This attack covers a large distance and comes out quickly at the start of the encounter. He also uses it when re-engaging after Phase 1. | Dodge sideways at the last moment. The charge tracks poorly once Moren commits to a direction. Punish his recovery as the Ibex turns around. | |
Slams his tower shield forward to stagger the player. This move is fast and usually follows a blocked attack, punishing players who hold their guard too long. | Release your block after deflecting his sword strikes and roll backward. Do not try to out-trade this move; the stagger leaves you vulnerable to follow-up attacks. | |
Sword Combo | A series of two to three quick sword slashes that deal moderate damage individually but stack up quickly. Moren often opens with this after dismounting or closing the distance on foot. | Block the first hit, then dodge through the remainder of the combo to position yourself behind him. Counterattack during the brief recovery window after the final swing. |
Mist Vanish (Phase Transition) | After losing enough HP in Phase 1, Moren disappears into a cloud of mist and smoke, fleeing deeper into the forest. This is not an attack but a phase transition that forces a tracking sequence. | Follow the frost trail and use the red circle markers on your minimap to locate where Moren has retreated. Be ready for an immediate Mounted Charge when you find him again. |
Minion Coordination | During Phase 1, Moren's huntsmen minions attack alongside him. They use bows and light melee weapons to pressure the player from flanking positions while Moren engages from the front. | Eliminate the minions first before focusing on Moren. Their ranged attacks can interrupt your dodges and combos at the worst moments. |
When you first engage Moren, he will charge at you immediately on his mount, and his huntsmen minions will join the fight. The priority in this phase is to clear the minions first. Fighting Moren while his followers pepper you with arrows from the sides is extremely dangerous, especially since Moren himself hits hard enough to demand your full attention.
A dual-wield build or any fast melee weapon setup works well here. The speed lets you dispatch minions quickly and then switch your focus to the boss before more can arrive. AoE abilities are particularly effective at sweeping the huntsmen away in groups.
When fighting Moren himself in Phase 1, be cautious about attacking his shield side. His tower shield absorbs a lot of damage and he will punish overaggressive play with his Shield Bash. Try to circle around to his sword arm side or get behind him entirely. Attack in short bursts of two to three hits, then dodge away before he retaliates.
Once you deplete Moren's first health bar, he vanishes into a cloud of mist and flees into the forest. You must track him down using the frost trail he leaves behind. Red circle markers on your minimap indicate his general direction. This tracking sequence can feel frustrating, so stay patient and follow the markers methodically rather than wandering blindly.
When you corner Moren again, be prepared for an immediate fight. He will attempt another Mounted Charge as soon as you get close, so have your dodge ready. Phase 2 is a solo encounter with no minions, but Moren's attacks deal significantly more damage than in Phase 1. Do not let your guard down just because the minions are gone.
The key to Phase 2 is patience. Moren will not disappear again once you engage him the second time; you simply need to deplete his remaining health. Play defensively, punish his recovery windows after charges and sword combos, and keep your healing items accessible. His increased damage means that a few unblocked hits can bring you dangerously low.
Bring plenty of Grilled Meat or other HP-recovery food to this fight. You can eat food every two seconds even while performing other actions, so keep healing throughout the encounter. Visit a Grind Stone and Anvil before heading to the Wayward Woods to apply temporary weapon and armor buffs. The weapon buff in particular helps shorten the fight, reducing the number of healing items you need to consume.
Defeating Moren, the Mistwood Huntmaster rewards the player with the materials needed to unlock one of the game's legendary mounts:
Reward | Description |
|---|---|
A crafting material dropped by Moren upon defeat. Take the horns to Elowen at the Witch's Lair in Hernand to craft the Sigil of Solidarity. This sigil permanently unlocks the Icicle Edge Alpine Ibex as a rideable mount that can be summoned at any time. |
The Icicle Edge Alpine Ibex is one of five legendary boss mounts added in Version 1.01.00, alongside the Rock Tusk Warthog, White Bear, Silver Fang, and Snowwhite Deer. Unlike regular mounts, legendary boss mounts do not frighten NPCs in towns, so you can ride them freely through populated areas.
Moren is a huntmaster of the Mistwood, a title that marks him as a leader among the forest hunters who patrol the Wayward Woods in the Pailune region. His title and his full set of Mistwood equipment suggest a deep connection to the misty woodlands he inhabits. The name "Mistwood" evokes the cries of creatures moving through fog, fitting for a hunter who uses mist and stealth to his advantage.
Moren rides an Icicle Edge Alpine Ibex, a rare white mountain goat that is native to the cold highland forests of Pailune. These ibex are powerful creatures capable of carrying an armored rider through rough terrain at high speed. Moren's bond with his mount is evidenced by the way they fight together, with the ibex serving as both transportation and a weapon during the Mounted Charge attack.
The Sport Hunter quest that leads to Moren's encounter originates from the Longleaf Tribe, a group connected to the forests and tanneries of Pailune. The fact that a bounty notice exists for Moren suggests he has become a threat to the local population, perhaps preying on travelers and traders who pass through the Wayward Woods. His huntsmen minions reinforce this picture of a bandit leader who commands a small warband from the cover of the forest.
Clear the minion huntsmen in Phase 1 before focusing on Moren. Fighting the boss while taking flanking arrow fire is a recipe for a quick death.
Do not attack Moren's shield side directly. Circle around to his weapon arm or get behind him to deal damage more efficiently.
When Moren vanishes into mist after Phase 1, follow the frost trail and watch the red circle markers on your minimap. Do not wander aimlessly through the forest.
Be ready for an immediate Mounted Charge when you relocate Moren in Phase 2. Have your dodge prepared before you approach him.
Phase 2 hits harder than Phase 1. Play more defensively and punish recovery windows rather than trying to rush the boss down.
Bring at least 100 Grilled Meat or equivalent healing items. You can eat food every two seconds while performing other actions, so heal aggressively throughout the fight.
A dual-wield build is recommended for the speed needed to clear minions and land hits during Moren's recovery windows.
After defeating Moren, take the Icicle Edge Alpine Ibex Horns to Elowen at the Witch's Lair in Hernand to craft the Sigil of Solidarity and unlock the mount.
