Crimson Malefact is the fight where the game takes Koo away. It is a single level 45 encounter in Chapter 9, set in the river zone of the Wasteland Region, and Emma faces it without any Bloom Arts, support skills, or companion damage. It is also one of the few story bosses that hands out no new Blade Art or Bloom Art, which makes it a pure skill check rather than a progression gate.
Encounter Summary
Detail | Value |
|---|---|
Chapter | Chapter 9 |
Level | 45 |
Region | Wasteland Region |
Location | The river zone, written as both Inumaki River Zone and Inukami River Zone |
Companion | Koo does not participate |
Phases | Two, with the second triggered by a cutscene around half health |
Skill reward | No new Blade Art or Bloom Art |
Crimson Malefact has no confirmed elemental weakness, and the fight does not hinge on finding one. Poison buildup is what reliably works, so the Hunter's Sword and a full stock of poison arrows and bolts are the standard preparation. Encounter listings split on the question, with some giving Water and others giving none at all, so no weakness is stated above. Spring Storm, one of the two swords most often recommended for the fight, does apply Drench, so a run that wants to test the Water claim already has the tool sitting in its inventory.
Reaching the Fight
Chapter 9 opens as an errand rather than a march. Overseer Gigi hands out the hunt once Emma is off the walking vessel, and the lair has to be located by asking: four residents of the colony pass the question along until the last one names the scout golem, and the scout golem gives up the location. The trip out is a ride on a yellow car with flying enemies harrying it the whole way. Koo rejoins at the end of the chapter, so the solo restriction covers exactly one fight and nothing after it.
The fight is not empty-handed either, despite awarding no Blade Art or Bloom Art. The Black Blossom sword is tied to this stretch of the campaign, and it carries a Poison Storm passive that calls poison lightning onto nearby foes for five seconds on each slash. Everything past that is contested. One catalogue hands it over at the walking vessel on beating this fight, a second has it arrive automatically at the start of Chapter 12, and a third files it under the last Shidou and Nue encounter. The same catalogues quote its melee attack and its poison buildup on incompatible scales, roughly double on one side of the split, a pattern that runs through their whole blade rosters rather than a disagreement about this sword in particular. The sword and its passive are confirmed; neither the number nor the source fight is.
Attack Patterns
Attack | How It Works | Response |
|---|---|---|
Bite | Rears up and lunges into a single bite. | Parry to stagger, then land a short punish. |
Bite Combo | Raises its head into a three-hit bite chain. | Parry all three. Counterattacking after the first or second bite gets Emma caught. |
Somersault | Lowers its head, flashes red, then somersaults forward. | Unparryable. Dodge on the flash. It stays vulnerable on landing. |
Four Attacks Into Somersault | Roars, glows red, then chains two bites, two claw swipes, and a somersault. | Parry the first four hits, dodge the finisher. There is no safe window inside the chain. |
Ground Swipe | Its front leg glows red before it tears rocks loose and throws them. | Unparryable. Dodge and reposition. |
Bite Into Jump Back | Lunges into a bite and immediately leaps away. | Parry early rather than on reaction, then use ranged damage while it is out. |
Spinning Dive | Glows red, leaps high, and crashes down with a spin that leaves spikes. | Unparryable. Dodge to either side. |
Tail Slam Bloom | Slams its tail so a red marker tracks Emma, then erupts a giant spider lily there. | Keep moving until the marker clears, then punish while it is stationary. |
Rapid Seed Barrage | Fires a fast barrage of seeds from range. | Too fast to parry reliably. Keep dodging until it ends. |
Tail Roots | Drives its tail into the ground so vines bloom under Emma after a delay. | Watch the ground indicators and keep moving. |
Tail Vines | Second phase. The vines pull Emma toward the boss on hit. | Sprint clear as soon as the vines start emerging. |
How to Beat Crimson Malefact
Build for survival first. High-defence armour, a full stock of poison arrows and bolts, and a weapon that applies poison give Emma a damage source that keeps working while she is stuck on defence. Spring Storm is a strong alternative if it is already upgraded, and Purity is the pick when sustain matters more than raw output.
The second phase starts with a short cutscene at roughly half health and adds several tracking area attacks that borrow from Koo's own flower skills: the seed barrage and the blooming ground markers read as Higanbana: Seeds and Higanbana: Bloom turned back on Emma, and one of its projectiles is Sakura: Javelin outright. Fight it at range where possible, respect the red markers, and spend Entanglement Overdrive after a full combo rather than in the middle of one.
Preparation
Every sustain option Emma normally leans on belongs to the companion, and the companion is not in the arena. That single fact decides the loadout.
Tool | Where It Comes From | What It Does |
|---|---|---|
Hunter's Sword | From the katana stand by the Great Forest: Entrance campsite in The Great Wall Terraces, after listening to the storyteller golem; listed with the other Katanas | 51 melee attack with the Envenomed passive: plus 8 poison buildup for five seconds |
Spring Storm | Beside the sleeping golem near the control panel past the Lake Base: Outer Wall camp in the Crater Zone, one chapter earlier | 45 melee attack with Turbulence: 8 percent slash damage and 50 drench buildup per swing |
Purity | Bought from the ancient golem merchant south of the Raging River camp for 4390 Amber, or later from Brad if it was left behind | 51 melee attack with Vampiric Blade: recovers HP equal to 8.5 percent of damage dealt for five seconds, which is the only healing on tap here |
High-defence armour | Whatever the Armor list offers by Chapter 9, chosen for raw defence rather than for a low awareness rating | Buys the extra hit an aggressive boss would otherwise take off the top, in a fight with no companion healing to fall back on |
Poison arrows and bolts | Crafted ammunition, covered under Bow and Ranged Combat | A damage source that keeps ticking while Emma is stuck on defence, which is most of the fight |
