Aerial Combat and Flight

AION 2 is built around aerial combat as a first-class system. Players can move in any direction, climb to gain altitude, and engage enemies from above, below, and around them. Many open-world zones, dungeons, and PvP battlegrounds are designed with verticality as the primary axis rather than as decoration on top of a flat map.
Flight is governed by a flight gauge that depletes while in the air and refills while on the ground or while gliding. The new engine gives flight a heavier, more momentum-based feel than the original game: maintaining altitude takes input and resource management, and players cannot simply hover in place indefinitely.
Gliding is a separate mode from full powered flight. Gliding consumes much less of the flight gauge and is the default movement option in zones that disallow active flight, such as the Middle Reshanta added in Season 3 on the Abyss map.
Skill effects, telegraphs, and bonuses respect the third dimension. A back-attack bonus from above is a real positioning option, not a flat 2D arc projected onto a vertical fight. Many boss encounters use mechanics that only resolve in 3D space, such as ground-pulling AoEs that punish players who stay airborne too long, or rising columns that reward players who time a vertical climb.

Class kits play differently in the air. Melee classes gain back-arc options that are unreachable on the ground; ranged classes can hold altitude as a kiting tool but pay a flight-gauge cost; magic classes manage cast position alongside the gauge. Aerial mechanics interact with the chain system described under Combat and Skill Chains: chain windows do not pause for vertical positioning, so misjudging a gauge can break a chain mid-rotation.
Zone Type | Flight Status |
|---|---|
Most overworld zones | Full flight allowed; gauge applies |
Cities and safe zones | Restricted flight or no flight, varies by zone |
Dungeons (most) | Full flight allowed inside the encounter, where the design supports it |
Lower Reshanta (Abyss) | Full open-world flight PvP |
Middle Reshanta (Abyss) | No flight since April 8, 2026; wind paths and updrafts carry players across |
Wings are not only the source of flight in AION 2; on the KR and TW build they are also a progression track. The Wings Enhance System, added in the late-May patch, lets players strengthen their wings to gain additional stats, separate from the enhancement systems that govern weapons and armor on the Gear and Progression page. Because flight is a core combat mechanic rather than just travel, wing stats feed directly into how a character performs in aerial fights and in the Abyss. The exact per-level gains are tuned on the live build and may be adjusted for the global launch.
The global build keeps wings as a stat-bearing item rather than a pure cosmetic. On the August 7, 2026 global preview stream NCsoft said wings carry stats at launch and can have their appearance swapped independently, and that wing skins bought from the cash shop grant no stats of their own. The stream is the only source for that so far; treat it as the stated plan until it appears in written launch notes.
On the Korean service each wing can be enhanced up to +10 for extra effects that apply while the wing is owned, using Kina, Unique-grade tuning stones and enhancement stones. Wing feathers from Expedition dungeons can be converted into enhancement stones or soul crystals, and enhancement uses enhancement stones instead of feathers because players held very different amounts of feathers. NCsoft's English announcement of the May 27, 2026 update describes the Wings Enhance System as letting players enhance their wings for additional stats.
Each wing has a possession effect, which applies while you own it, and an equip effect, which applies while it is worn; tooltips have shown both since February 11, 2026. Wing presets, added on March 4, 2026, let each preset equip a different wing, and wings joined the combined equipment sets on March 18. On the global service the Blazing Sun Wings in the Ultimate Founder's Pack are an appearance-only item with no stats.
The Abyss adds travel aids that matter in fights. Flight circles sit next to the strongholds of Lower Reshanta, guarded by NPCs whose detection range and speed were raised on January 7, 2026, and more were placed in the middle layer in February 2026. Middle Reshanta has had no flight since April 8, 2026: wind paths were added there on April 15, riding one has made a character immune to movement-control effects since April 29, and four islands added on May 27 are reached through updrafts. The fall-death altitude in Middle Reshanta was raised sharply on April 15.
Assault skills have been usable on the ground and in flight, rather than only while gliding, since January 14, 2026, and four more skills gained the condition that they can be used while flying on February 25, 2026. Getting off a pet while falling blocks skill use, the same as an ordinary fall. In Spacetime Rift: Domination the flight time consumed while taking part was halved on September 9, 2026.
Save gauge for combat. Glide between objectives and only burn full flight when you need vertical leverage in a fight or to escape a bad position.
Watch the ground markers. Ground-based mechanics still affect airborne players when they land, and many bosses force a touchdown by removing flight temporarily.
Practice 3D dodging. The cardinal-direction dodge from grounded combat is multiplied in the air; learning to translate dodge inputs into upward and downward arcs is a real skill curve.
Plan routes through Middle Reshanta. Without flight, wind paths, updrafts and glide arcs from high ground are the quick ways to reposition. Gliding from a contested chokepoint without an exit plan is the easy way to die.
