With this in hand, every day's a good day for fishing!
Simple Fishing Rod is the launch-build fishing tool in Windrose. It is the only item in the tool roster that does not expose a combat stat block: the item panel shows only a Weight value, because the rod is not designed to be swung as a weapon. Equipping it switches the character into a fishing animation and enables casting into ocean and lake tiles.

The Simple Fishing Rod is a craft-only tool with no current loot source surfaced in the in-game loot tables. Because the craft sits behind a Lvl 2 Workbench and the Foothills iron chain, it is firmly a mid-game craft rather than an early-game scavenge target.
The Simple Fishing Rod is not bought or sold by any vendor. The tool is exclusively crafted at a Workbench Lvl 2.
All three ingredients sit behind meaningful upstream chains, which is what pushes the Simple Fishing Rod out of the starter-tool tier:
Hardwood: requires at minimum an Iron Axe to chop. Stone and Copper axes cannot damage hardwood trees.
Rope: produced from fiber resources at the dedicated rope-making station after harvesting enough fiber plants in the Coastal Jungle and Foothills.
Foothills Iron Ingot: requires the Foothills biome, a Copper Pickaxe to mine Foothills Iron Ore, and a working Smelting Furnace with Charcoal.
Effectively, the Simple Fishing Rod unlocks once the Foothills economy is already running. Any player who has an Iron Axe and an Iron Pickaxe in rotation can craft the rod in the same session.
Fish from ocean or lake tiles to obtain Fish Fillets and other aquatic ingredients for mid-tier Cooking recipes.
Equip and cast from a pier, beach, or the deck of a ship. The catch pool varies by biome and depth, so changing position shifts the species caught.
Pair with worm bait dug using the Shovel for higher-value bites. The Shovel's Dig mode is how the game surfaces worm pickups from marked damp ground.
The fishing system that this rod feeds into is documented on the Fishing page, which covers catch tables, biome variation, and the Cooking recipes that use Fish Fillets. For the broader farming and food loop, see the Farming article.
Store a stack of worm bait from Shovel dig sites before heading to a pier. The rod does not require bait, but baited casts skew the catch pool toward higher-quality fish.
Fishing is not interruptible by nearby enemies like combat is; a clear beach or pier is the best perch for long cooking-supply sessions.
There is currently one tier of fishing rod in the tool roster; do not expect a Copper- or Iron-named rod upgrade. The Simple Fishing Rod is the full rod roster through the Foothills progression.
