Washed-up debris along every coastline doubles as a free nail supply. A Stone Axe swung at abandoned wreckage, broken rowboats, small crates, and barrels on the beach returns Nails whenever the struck object contains visible metal. The salvage takes no tool upgrades and works on the starter island, so a shoreline sweep around the first beach covers early-construction nail demand without pulling a single Copper Ore out of the mining queue.
Why this matters. The first few structures a player builds (a Bonfire, Workbench, storage containers, and a Smelting Furnace) burn through the first two or three stacks of Nails quickly, and Copper Ingot is the same input that gates the Fast Travel Bell (10 Copper Ingots) and the Shovel (3 Copper Ingots). Using beach salvage for Nails reserves every Copper Ingot the Smelting Furnace produces for those gatekeeper items, which in turn opens the rest of the early-game loop. Once Foothills Iron Ingot comes online, the trade-off fades, but for the starter-island hours the salvage sweep pays back in saved copper every single run.
Sweep routine. The efficient pattern is to run the perimeter of any new island with a Stone Axe before walking inland: every beached hull, half-buried rowboat, cluster of crates, and barrel along the tideline is a potential nail drop. Pair the sweep with a mining detour only once the beach yield tapers; this usually holds the early camp through the first dozen ship-gear upgrades before Copper Ingot demand for ship hulls forces dedicated mining runs.
