General Lothaire

Added the confirmed Chapter II placement in the full game and the studio’s response to demo difficulty feedback
General Lothaire, the Eagle-Bearer, is the first major boss demonstrated for Valor Mortis. He has anchored the public face of the game since the reveal in August 2025 and closed every hands-on build to date, including the October 2025 global pre-alpha playtest and the first level of the 2026 demo. In the finished game he sits later than that: the studio has confirmed he is the boss at the end of Chapter II.
Lothaire is a senior figure within the corrupted Grande Armée that the supernatural plague has remade into the Eternal Guard. His title, the Eagle-Bearer, ties him to the standards that real Napoleonic armies carried into battle and is reused here as a marker of his rank inside the corrupted hierarchy. He stands as the first true test of William's resurrected combat kit and serves as the demo arc's narrative endpoint.
Hands-on coverage of the Gamescom and playtest fights described a multi-phase encounter with several reliable moves to recognize. Lothaire throws corpses across the arena as a long-range pressure move, slams the ground to clear space around him, and exposes growths on his body that can be detonated by off-hand pistol shots to weaken him for follow-up melee. The fight rewards moving between ranges rather than committing fully to either, and uses the full Combat kit of parries, dashes, and finishers.
The most consistent way players have approached the fight in the available footage is to stay close enough to punish telegraphed melee attacks but ready to dash out and answer the corpse-throw or ground slam from the edge of the arena. The pistol shots on the visible growths are the heaviest single source of damage, so saving ammunition for those windows pays off more than emptying it into regular swings. Healing flasks are limited, so trading hits to skip a phase rarely works as well as patience does.
Every playable build put Lothaire at the end of the opening level, which in the demo meant meeting him after roughly thirty minutes of play. That is not where he belongs. In September 2026 the studio said he is intended as the boss at the end of Chapter II in the full game, and explained the change of impression that follows: thirty minutes is a short time to get accustomed to a first-person combat system that has no real precedent in the genre, whereas by Chapter II a player will have spent longer with the mechanics and levelled up, making the difficulty curve much smoother.
The studio raised this in direct response to demo feedback, saying the most common criticism it saw was that Lothaire was too unforgiving at the end of Chapter I. It framed the answer as placement rather than nerfing, though it also named boss variety and the difficulty curve as one of four areas it was reworking before launch.
Lothaire has only been playable in pre-alpha and demo builds, and the studio has since said the demo levels were bespoke recreations rather than the shipping versions of their chapters. His health values, ammunition costs and attack timings are all likely to differ at launch, so treat the strategies above as a starting point rather than a final guide. The Weapons and Transmutations pages cover the tools available to face him.
As the first named boss in the public demos, Lothaire fits the role of the showcase enemy that introduces players to the corrupted Grande Armée. He sits alongside other named figures such as Sergeant Gaspard "Cannonhand" Dubois, introduced in the Crimson Plague trailer, and The Orphan, introduced in the Triple-i Initiative trailer. Together they sketch out the scale of the threat William is being asked to push back against. The wider faction context lives on the Setting and Story page.
