Transmutations are the off-hand corruption powers of Valor Mortis. Where melee weapons handle the direct, physical side of a fight, Transmutations channel the supernatural plague that grips the world, giving you a second layer of offense to weave into each encounter. They are tied directly to the corruption that defines the protagonist's resurrection and the broader story.
Powers Drawn From the Plague
The plague that corrupts the land is not only a threat but also a source of power. William is resurrected with the ability to wield and corrupt this plague, and Transmutations are how that ability expresses itself in moment-to-moment play. They function as off-hand abilities or spells, used alongside your weapon rather than in place of it. For the wider context of the plague and the war that surrounds it, see the Setting and Story page.

Use in Combat
Because Transmutations sit in the off-hand they are meant to be layered into the flow of a fight rather than used on their own. You can apply a Transmutation to add pressure while continuing to attack, parry, and manage your stamina with your main weapon. This pairing of physical strikes and corruption powers gives the system its depth, and how it slots into the wider fighting model is detailed on the Combat page. Choosing the right moment to spend a Transmutation, rather than firing it off at random, is part of playing well.
A Shown Example: Fire
Fire is the most fully demonstrated Transmutation and the one every playable build has included. It throws a sustained stream of flame from the off hand, sets enemies alight, and deals burning damage over several seconds, which makes it the studio's own stated answer to grouped foes.
Behaviour | Detail |
|---|---|
How it is acquired | Through a scripted story scene rather than a menu purchase |
Damage model | The initial scorching does solid damage, and the burn accelerates once an enemy's burn meter fills |
Interaction with finishers | Burn status enables a finisher, tying the power back into the melee loop |
Environmental use | It melts obstacles blocking the way forward |
Against bosses | Hands-on accounts of the demo describe it being used to stun the first boss |
The Shield Transmutation
The demo's second level introduced a Shield Transmutation, announced by the studio alongside the rapier and the musket. That is the whole of what has been published. No official post and no hands-on account describes what it blocks, how long it lasts, or what it costs, so it is on this page as a confirmed name rather than a described ability.
Traversal as Transmutation
The grapple, the wall run and the swing across wide gaps all draw on the same source. The studio describes them as the protagonist's connection to the nephtoglobin plague expressing itself as movement, which makes the traversal kit part of this system rather than a separate one. A 2026 developer interview also named an ability to attract and repel objects as something William discovers. That is a single mention with no corroboration on any other surface, so treat it as reported rather than confirmed.
Transmutations vs Weapon Weak Points
Transmutations are distinct from the weak-point work you do with weapons. The rapier and flintlock pistol both let you target the glowing or vulnerable spots on tougher enemies; Transmutations instead apply supernatural effects to whole groups or to a single foe's posture in a different way. Both share the off-hand slot in practice, so building a loadout is a question of which side of the toolkit you want available in the next room.
Resources and Costs
Each Transmutation use draws on a resource. Hands-on accounts of the playable builds identify it for the Fire power specifically: it spends Nephtoglobin, carried in vials, and the vials are dropped by enemies whose weak points you have destroyed. That closes a loop with the Combat page's weak-point pressure, since the same action that opens an enemy up is the one that pays for the power.
The violet bar beneath the health bar in storefront screenshots is the most likely on-screen representation of that supply, though the studio has not labelled it.
No cost figure has been published for any Transmutation, and no source has given one. The Catalysts and Progression page covers the separate currency used for permanent upgrades, which is not the same resource.
Expanding the Roster
The published roster is Fire, the Shield, and the three traversal abilities, plus the unconfirmed attract-and-repel mentioned in one interview. The studio has said the system is built to grow as William's control over the plague does, and has not published a total count.
As of September 13, 2026, across the official store listing, the official site, the studio's Steam development posts and the published trailers, no Transmutation beyond those has been named, and none has a published cost, cooldown or upgrade path.
Launch overview
The September overview shows Fire setting enemies alight, Shield absorbing incoming damage before releasing a shockwave, and Grapple using fixed points to cross the environment. Transmutations are wielded in William's left hand and can deal damage, change enemy or player effects, or support traversal.
The studio also confirms that magic can be levelled up, without publishing the costs or a full upgrade tree. Earlier statements about an unpublished upgrade path remain a September 13 snapshot, not a claim that upgrading is absent.
