Nephtoglobin is the substance at the centre of the supernatural plague in Valor Mortis. It is what corrupts the soldiers and townspeople of the occupied east, what turns some of them into outright abominations, and what gives William the powers he wakes up with after his death on the battlefield. Almost every supernatural system in the game traces back to it.
What It Is
The studio has kept the substance deliberately vague. In the material published around the reveal it is described as a mysterious substance that the protagonist has only heard about in rumours before he encounters it, and that has corrupted his comrades while granting him new life and new abilities. Later material treats it as a plague that spreads across the continent in the wake of Napoleon's stalled conquest, corrupting the land as well as the people standing on it.
What the game has not published is a mechanism. There is no first-party account of where Nephtoglobin comes from, how it spreads between people, or whether it can be cured or refined. As of September 13, 2026 the official store listing, the official site and the studio's own development posts all describe the effects and none of them describe the cause.
What It Does to the Corrupted
Exposure does not produce one uniform monster. The published enemy roster shows at least three outcomes:
Outcome | Who it happens to | What it looks like |
|---|---|---|
Corrupted soldier | Rank and file of the Eternal Guard | The blue coat and white crossbelts survive, the body underneath does not; limbs are replaced by blades grown from raw flesh |
Feral civilian | Townspeople, shown as corrupted villagers | Sheets of violet tissue over an arm, a shoulder or half a face, fighting with tools and torches |
Abomination | Individual figures such as The Orphan and Sergeant Gaspard "Cannonhand" Dubois | Human shape abandoned entirely, or fused with metal |
The elite Relentless are a fourth case and the only one the studio has described as deliberate rather than accidental. It calls them nephto-infused, and presents the infusion as something done to volunteers inside secret training facilities rather than something that happens to them in the field.
What It Does for William

William's connection to Nephtoglobin is the in-fiction reason his kit works. Two systems are tied directly to it:
Transmutations, the off-hand powers he channels in combat, are the corruption used offensively.
The traversal kit is described in the same terms. The studio has said William's ties to the substance are what let him grapple through the air, run along walls and manipulate terrain, and the trailer material frames the grapple and wall run as nephtoglobin-powered rather than as ordinary athletics.
That framing matters because it makes movement and magic one system in the fiction rather than two. It also puts William on the same continuum as the enemies he fights: the difference is that he directs the corruption instead of being consumed by it.
Technology Built Around It
The substance is not only biological in the game's fiction. In a March 2026 development post the studio said its weapons are designed to blend the historical period with supernatural fiction and with technology that the discovery of Nephtoglobin made possible, publishing concept art of William's blunderbuss alongside that note. That places Nephtoglobin inside the world's industry and armouries as well as inside its bodies, and it is the stated reason the arsenal on the Weapons page can look period-correct and still behave strangely.
Spelling
The reveal announcement in August 2025 spelled the word "Nephtogolobin" once. Every subsequent first-party post uses Nephtoglobin, sometimes lowercased as nephtoglobin, and the shortened form nephto-infused for the Relentless. Treat the reveal spelling as a typo.
What Is Still Open
As of September 13, 2026, across the official store listing, the official site, the studio's Steam development posts and the published trailers, the studio has not named the in-game resource bar that Transmutations spend, has not explained how Nephtoglobin is harvested or concentrated, and has not said whether the conspiracy teased in marketing material concerns the substance's origin. The Catalysts and Progression page covers the economy that sits on top of it.
