Adaptations

Post-launch expansion: six Adaptations named in the studio's own gameplay guide, the full list of 25 by Adaptation Level as reported by one post-launch guide, the first-party cap of 10 Strands on a first run and New Game Plus additions, dated negative rewritten
Adaptations are the passive layer of Marvel's Wolverine. Insomniac describes them as amplifying Logan's momentum on the battlefield, and says there are dozens of them. They are not a checklist: they are equipped against a limited allowance, so an Adaptation loadout is a set of choices.
Where Special Techniques are the moves you press a button for, Adaptations change the rules of a fight while you are in it. The examples given in official material are absorbing more bullets, increasing the effectiveness of Rage, widening the parry window, and terrorising enemies in the middle of a fight. Some can be used to make the game harder rather than easier, and they upgrade long-term effects and skills including Logan's health and his Rage meter.
Six Adaptations are named in PlayStation's own gameplay guide: Tough Skinned, which reduces melee damage; Healing Dangerously, which restores Health on a well-timed reaction; Barrage Recharge, which returns Special Techniques faster; Enraging Sprint, which turns incoming fire into Rage; and Crate Finder and Whisky Finder, which detect collectibles from farther away and through obstructions. Beyond those, one post-launch guide whose author reports unlocking every one lists 25 Adaptations in total, unlocked by Adaptation Level, with four available at level 1 and level 10 adding only the tenth Strand. That list and the effect wording below are single-source paraphrases rather than menu text, though every Adaptation the studio has named appears in it with a consistent effect.
Adaptation Level | Adaptation | Effect (as reported) |
|---|---|---|
1 | Healing Dangerously | Reacting well to Power Attacks or Reckless Attacks restores Health (named by the studio) |
1 | Expanded Crit | Critical Strikes can be performed on enemies with more remaining health |
1 | Barrage Recharge | The Special Technique on L2 and Square recharges faster (named by the studio) |
1 | Enraging Sprint | Enemy ranged attacks build Rage while sprinting (named by the studio) |
2 | Enraging Stealth | Stealth takedowns build extra Rage |
2 | Bullet Sponge | Ranged attacks deal less damage |
3 | Healing Dodge | Dodging an attack restores Health |
3 | Extended Parry | A wider timing window for parries |
4 | Tough Skinned | Melee attacks deal less damage (named by the studio) |
4 | Combo Ender Recharger | Combo Enders recharge the Special Technique on L2 and Triangle faster |
5 | Healing Parry | Parrying an attack restores Health |
5 | Rage Intimidation | Entering Rage Tier 2 intimidates a nearby basic enemy, opening a Critical Strike |
5 | Crate Finder | Senses detect material crates at greater range and through obstacles (named by the studio) |
6 | Healing Crit | Critical Strikes restore Health |
6 | Parry Recharge | Parrying recharges the Special Technique on L2 and X |
6 | Enraging Ender | Combo Enders build extra Rage |
7 | Dodge Recharge | Dodging recharges the Special Technique on L2 and Circle faster |
7 | Enraging Barrage | Barrages build extra Rage |
7 | Tier 2 Crit | Critical Strikes on staggered, low-health enemies from Rage Tier 2 |
8 | Desperate Regeneration | Below 35 per cent Health, passive regeneration increases until Health returns to 50 per cent |
8 | Chain Crit | A Critical Strike intimidates a nearby basic enemy |
8 | Whisky Finder | Senses detect whisky bottles at greater range and through obstructions (named by the studio) |
9 | Enraged Recharge | Faster passive recharge of all Special Techniques at Rage Tier 2, faster again at Tier 3 |
9 | Rage Longer | Reduced Rage decay at Tier 3 |
9 | Leaping Crit | At Rage Tier 3, hold Triangle to Critical Strike a basic enemy |
10 | No new Adaptation | The tenth Strand only, which matches the studio's stated cap of 10 equipped on a first run |
The catch is capacity. Adaptations are equipped against a limited strand allowance, sometimes described as mutation strands, so building a loadout means choosing between perks instead of taking all of them. Raising that ceiling is one of the rewards for finishing Nightmare Doors trials quickly, which is what ties the optional content directly back into the build.
Adaptation Level is the second gate. It climbs to 10, a figure that comes from the game's own trophy requirements and matches the studio's stated cap of 10 equipped Adaptations on a first playthrough. AP toward the next level comes from whisky bottles and Nightmare Trials. A New Game Plus run adds Adaptations that are not available on a first run at all. See Progression and Upgrades and Trophies.
System | Interaction |
|---|---|
Several named Adaptations key off Rage tier or convert damage into Rage | |
Recharge-speed Adaptations shorten the cooldown on equipped Special Techniques | |
Parry-window and bullet-absorption effects change the moment-to-moment defensive loop | |
Fast trial completions raise the strand allowance, widening the loadout | |
Suits raise maximum health separately. Adaptations are a different axis of the same build |
As of September 21, 2026, checked against the PlayStation product page and its gameplay guide, the studio's support pages, its official posts and every released trailer, Insomniac has published no full list of Adaptations and no strand cost for any individual Adaptation. What the studio has stated is the cap: a maximum of 10 can be equipped during a first playthrough, and New Game Plus adds more Strands and four additional Adaptations. The list of 25 above comes from a single post-launch guide.
