Overview
Tilling Treasure is a hidden benefit of farming in Starsand Island. Every time a player tills a soil node using the Hoe, there is a random chance for a buried treasure chest to pop out of the ground. These chests contain coins, and sometimes rare Immortal Seeds. Because tilling is already part of the normal crop-planting workflow, this mechanic serves as a passive income source that rewards players for simply preparing their fields.
The tilling treasure mechanic is separate from Treasure Maps, which guide the player to specific dig spots using a golden arrow. Tilling treasure is entirely random and does not require any special item to trigger.
How It Works
When a player uses the Hoe on a tillable soil node at their homestead, the game rolls a random chance for a treasure chest to appear. If the roll succeeds, a chest spawns directly on the tilled tile. The player can then open it to collect the loot inside. Not every till will produce a chest; the spawn rate appears to be low but consistent. In extended sessions where a full Stamina bar was spent entirely on tilling, players have reported unearthing up to 15 chests in a single run.
You can also till and then un-till the same soil node repeatedly to keep rolling for chests. This makes it possible to farm treasure intentionally rather than waiting for it to happen during normal crop planting.
Chest Types
Three distinct chest variations can appear from tilling. Their visual appearance differs, but all of them draw from the same reward pool of coins and seeds.
Chest Type | Appearance |
|---|---|
Vine Chest | A small container wrapped in vines |
Wooden Chest | A clean, standard-looking wooden chest |
Blue Chest | A mysterious light blue chest made from an unknown material |
Rewards
Each chest contains a coin payout, and some chests also include a bonus Immortal Seed. The coin amounts vary per chest.
Reward Type | Details |
|---|---|
Coins | 200 to 800 coins per chest, with most falling in the 200 to 600 range |
Immortal Seeds | Rare drop; reported varieties include Immortal Cucumber, Wheat, Cabbage, Grass, and Water Spinach seeds |
Immortal Seeds are particularly valuable because crops grown from them never need replanting and produce harvests year-round regardless of the current season. For more details on earning coins, see the How to Make Money Fast guide.
Using the Mechanical Tiller
The Mechanical Tiller is a craftable upgrade that tills soil without consuming any Stamina. Once a player unlocks its blueprint and builds one, they can till an unlimited number of soil nodes at zero cost. This makes the Mechanical Tiller the best tool for farming tilling treasure, since the only limiting factor (Stamina) is removed entirely.
With the Mechanical Tiller in hand, a player can till and un-till large stretches of farmland repeatedly, generating a steady flow of treasure chests and coins. This turns what is normally a passive bonus into a reliable, repeatable money-making strategy.
Comparison with Other Treasure Sources
Starsand Island has several ways to find Treasure Chests. The table below compares tilling treasure with the main alternatives.
Source | Repeatable | Stamina Cost | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
Tilling Treasure | Yes | Hoe costs Stamina; Mechanical Tiller costs none | Random chance per till; can be farmed intentionally |
Yes | None (passive) | Craftable structure that periodically generates chests on the farm | |
Limited | None (digging is free) | Each map leads to one chest; maps are consumable | |
Fixed World Chests | No | None | One-time chests scattered across the island and Moonlit Forest |
Tips
Save your Stamina bar for a dedicated tilling session if you want to maximize chest drops before unlocking the Mechanical Tiller.
Once you have the Mechanical Tiller, combine tilling treasure runs with normal crop planting so you earn coins and plant seeds at the same time.
Keep an eye out for Immortal Seeds in the loot. They are rare but extremely useful, since Immortal crops produce harvests in every season without replanting.
The tilling treasure mechanic stacks well with World Tree farming. Plant several World Trees on your homestead and till the surrounding soil for double the chest output.
Tilling treasure works only on your homestead farm soil, not on wild terrain or floors inside the Moonlit Forest.
