Animal Cleaning
Animal Cleaning is a core ranching mechanic in Starsand Island. Farm animals get dirty over time and need to be brushed regularly to maintain their happiness. Higher happiness leads to better quality byproducts and is a prerequisite for breeding. Neglecting grooming causes happiness to drop, reducing both the quality and quantity of resources your animals produce.
Getting the Brush
The Brush Blueprint is purchased from Pastelle at Green Pasture Ranch for 150 coins. Once you have the blueprint, craft the Brush at any Worktable.

Material | Quantity | Source |
|---|---|---|
Softwood | 2 | Chop small trees like Weeping Figs, or buy from Zerine's General Store |
Wool | 2 | Harvested from Rabbits kept in a Rabbit Hutch |
The Brush is inexpensive to craft. Softwood is abundant across the island, and Wool comes from rabbits once you have a Rabbit Hutch set up. You can also draw materials from Storage Boxes during crafting, so you do not need to carry them in your backpack.
How Cleaning Works
Animals periodically become dirty through normal daily activity. When an animal needs cleaning, a brush icon appears above its head and it gains the "Messy" status label, visible when you check its stats. To clean an animal:
Equip the Brush from your toolbar.
Approach the dirty animal.
Press the interact button (left mouse button on PC) to brush it.
Cleaning is instant and immediately boosts the animal's happiness. Animals typically need cleaning every couple of days, though the exact frequency can vary. Check your animals daily as part of your ranching routine to catch any that have become dirty.
Happiness System
Every farm animal has a happiness meter that affects the quality of resources it produces. Cleaning is one of several actions that increase happiness.
Action | Effect |
|---|---|
Brushing (cleaning) | Increases happiness; removes Messy status |
Feeding | Increases happiness; required daily for animal health |
Petting | Small happiness boost from interacting with the animal |
Playing Music (Ukulele) | Increases happiness for nearby animals |
Hand-feeding special items | Bonus happiness from feeding treats by hand |
Higher happiness translates directly to better quality byproducts, which sell for more at shops. Animals at high happiness levels also have a greater chance of producing premium-quality goods. Keeping your animals consistently clean, fed, and happy is the most reliable way to maximize your ranching income.
DNA Traits and Grooming
Every animal in Starsand Island carries DNA traits that affect its behavior, breeding, and care requirements. Three traits directly impact how easy or difficult it is to maintain an animal's happiness through grooming and interaction.
Trait | Type | Effect |
|---|---|---|
Optimism | Positive | 50% chance for happiness to double when rising. Effectively halves the cleaning effort needed. |
Bloom | Negative | Decreases every happiness boost by 1 point. Makes maintaining happiness tedious and slow. |
Pride | Negative | Animal cannot be petted. Removes one happiness source entirely, though brushing still works. |
Optimism is the best grooming-related trait. Animals with Optimism need less frequent attention because each cleaning session has a coin-flip chance of giving double the happiness. When breeding, prioritize pairing animals that share the Optimism trait. If both parents carry Optimism, the offspring has roughly a 90% chance of inheriting it.
Bloom is the opposite: it reduces every happiness gain by 1 point, making it harder to raise happiness through any method. Animals with Bloom require more frequent cleaning, feeding, and petting to reach the same happiness level as normal animals.
Pride prevents petting but does not block brushing or feeding. An animal with Pride can still be cleaned and fed normally. The main issue is that you lose one happiness source, which slows overall happiness growth. Some guides recommend selling Pride animals immediately because they are harder to keep happy.
Breeding Requirements
Animal cleaning is directly connected to the breeding system. Animals will only breed overnight if they meet all three conditions:
Item | Description |
|---|---|
Fed | The animal has been fed that day. |
Clean | The animal does not have the Messy status. |
Happy | The animal's happiness is above the minimum threshold. |
If any of these conditions is not met, breeding will not occur. This means neglecting grooming does not just affect product quality; it can halt your breeding program entirely. Make cleaning part of your daily routine, especially if you are actively trying to breed specific traits.
Animal-Specific Notes
Different animals serve different secondary purposes on the farm beyond producing byproducts. These roles do not affect cleaning mechanics, but knowing them helps with overall ranch management.
Animal | Secondary Role |
|---|---|
Eat weeds that grow on your farmland | |
Clear bugs from your crops | |
Eat snails that damage plants |
All animals follow the same cleaning mechanics regardless of species. The Brush works on rabbits, chickens, ducks, cows, and every other farm animal in the same way.
Tips
Check your animals every morning as part of your daily ranch routine. Catching a dirty animal early prevents happiness from dropping too far.
The Brush never breaks or wears out. Once crafted, you have it forever.
If you are breeding for specific traits, keep cleaning consistent. One missed day can prevent overnight breeding.
Animals with the Optimism trait are the most low-maintenance. Seek this trait when purchasing new animals from Green Pasture Ranch.
Avoid keeping animals with both Bloom and Pride. The combination makes happiness nearly impossible to maintain at high levels.
Playing the Ukulele near your animal pens boosts happiness for multiple animals at once. Combine it with brushing for the most efficient happiness gains.
