Overview
The New Paper is a newspaper in Paralives that provides both lore-related information about the town and gameplay related to optional quests. It serves as a daily source of world-building content and practical opportunities for the player, bridging narrative storytelling with interactive gameplay systems. The newspaper is delivered to Parafolk each morning and plays a central role in how players learn about events happening in the town.
Delivery and Display
Every morning, a newspaper is delivered to all residents. When a Parafolk first moves to a new town, they also receive an issue right away. An on-screen notification alerts the player when a new issue arrives. Opening the notification brings up a full-page pop-up that displays the day's news as headlines, sometimes accompanied by photos.
The newspaper interface is designed to resemble a real newspaper layout, with prominent headlines and supporting imagery. This presentation style contributes to the game's world-building by making the town feel like a living community with its own local press and ongoing stories.
Types of Headlines
The New Paper features two main categories of headlines, each serving a different purpose in the game.
Category | Purpose | Examples |
|---|---|---|
Provide humorous or interesting stories about town happenings, mentioning locations and characters to flesh out the game world. | Stories about a train accident, commentary from Mayor Gloomberg, references to local landmarks and residents. | |
Quests and Opportunities | Present optional tasks and activities that players can choose to pursue, helping them discover new things to do. | Collecting items for the museum, financial opportunities, special event invitations, seasonal activities. |
The lore headlines give the town personality and history. Rather than existing as a static backdrop, the town has its own ongoing narrative that unfolds through the newspaper. The quest headlines tie into the Goals system, as reading the newspaper can unlock new long-term objectives for Parafolk to pursue. This makes checking the daily paper a mechanically rewarding habit, not just a flavor element.
Mayor Gloomberg
Mayor Gloomberg is the town's first known elected official and was publicly introduced through The New Paper. The first revealed issue of the newspaper included references to Mayor Gloomberg, making The New Paper the source of this character's debut in the game's lore. Mayor Gloomberg appears to be a recurring figure in the newspaper's commentary, adding a political dimension to the town's narrative.
Town Events
The New Paper plays a major part in town events. It is currently the only known source of information for the player to know when an event takes place and where it is located. Without checking the newspaper, players may miss out on time-limited activities or gatherings happening around town.
This design choice ties daily newspaper reading into the core Live Mode gameplay loop. Players who make a habit of reading The New Paper each morning will be better informed about what is happening in their town on any given day, while those who skip it may discover events only by stumbling across them in the open world.
Archive System
An icon in the upper right corner of the newspaper interface provides access to past issues. This archive system lets players revisit previous headlines and catch up on stories they may have missed. It is not yet fully confirmed whether opportunities and quests from past issues remain available for completion, or if they expire once the day has passed.
The archive adds a record-keeping element to the game. Players who enjoy the narrative side of Paralives can browse through old issues to follow ongoing storylines, track Mayor Gloomberg's commentary over time, or simply enjoy the humor of past headlines.
Discounts and Financial Opportunities
The New Paper occasionally features discounts and financial opportunities. These can include coupons for shops around town or other ways to save or earn paradimes. This adds an economic incentive to reading the newspaper daily, as players can stretch their Parafolk's budget by taking advantage of limited-time offers.
Modding Support
Headlines in The New Paper can be modded and shared via the Steam Workshop. This means players can create custom newspaper content, including new lore stories, quest prompts, or humorous articles. Other players can then download and install these mods to customize what appears in their game's newspaper. This opens up creative possibilities for community storytelling and allows the newspaper system to grow well beyond what the developers include at launch.
Development History
The New Paper was first revealed during the gameplay stream on November 25, 2025. The first demonstrated issue featured stories about a train accident and museum collection opportunities, along with the introduction of Mayor Gloomberg. An earlier trailer from June 2025 showed a vending machine labeled "Paralives News" in the town, which may suggest either the existence of competing newspapers within the game world or a name change that occurred during development. The in-town office location of The New Paper has not yet been disclosed.
