Merged character-customization article: combined all customization options, hidden clothing details, editor interface description, multiplayer identity, full Kickstarter stretch goal timeline, and development background into single comprehensive article
The Character Editor is the in-game interface where players customize their explorer's appearance before setting out into the world. It was the tenth and final Kickstarter stretch goal, unlocked on September 12, 2024, the last day of the campaign. The feature was not part of the original game design; Square Glade Games added it in response to overwhelming community demand for personalization options during the funding drive.
The editor is accessed when creating a new save file. Players configure their character's body type, hairstyle, hair color, clothing, and skin tone before entering the world. All changes are displayed in real time on the character model, allowing players to preview each option before confirming.
The editor presents the character model in the center of the screen with category tabs arranged on the side. Players navigate between the different customization categories using these tabs. Each tab displays all available options as a visual grid, making it easy to compare choices at a glance. Selecting an option immediately updates the character model, so there is no need to back out and re-enter to see the result.
The character editor provides the following confirmed customization categories:
Category | Options |
|---|---|
Body type | Multiple body types with different silhouettes; the concept artist created additional body shapes during development beyond the initial default |
Hairstyle | Selection of different hairstyle options |
Hair color | Choice of hair colors |
Clothing style | Multiple starting outfits with different visual designs |
Clothing color | Customizable color palette for clothing items |
Skin tone | Range of skin tones; the demo received an update adding more variety to this category |
Body type selection is independent of all other customization choices. Any hairstyle, hair color, clothing, and skin tone can be combined with any body type.
Beyond the starting outfits available in the character editor, additional clothing styles can be found hidden throughout the world. These discoverable outfits reward exploration and give players reasons to revisit landmarks and venture into off-the-beaten-path locations across every biome. Found clothing is added to the player's wardrobe and can be equipped after discovery. The hidden clothing system suggests an in-game wardrobe menu exists outside the initial character creation screen, though the full details of this system will become clear at launch.
Character models use the same low-poly art style as the rest of the game. They are stylized and rounded rather than photorealistic, with flat colors and minimal shading that match the overall visual identity. The character is visible during third-person on-foot exploration and walking. During first-person driving, the character's hands appear on the steering wheel.
In co-op sessions with up to four players, character customization helps distinguish players from one another when sharing the same camper van. Each player creates their own character independently when joining a session. Different body types, hairstyles, and clothing combinations make it straightforward to tell who is who during exploration and building, even at a distance thanks to the game's distinct low-poly silhouettes.
The Character Editor was the tenth and final stretch goal in the Kickstarter campaign, which ran for 30 days in August and September 2024. It was unlocked on September 12, the last day of the campaign. The campaign raised EUR 265,679 from 5,197 backers, reaching 885% of its original EUR 30,000 goal. All ten stretch goals were achieved during the campaign:
Order | Stretch Goal | Date Unlocked |
|---|---|---|
1 | Upgrade Units | August 14 |
2 | Camping | August 15 |
3 | Cozy Kites | August 17 |
4 | Fishing | August 21 |
5 | Beekeeping | August 23 |
6 | Modular Sofas | August 26 |
7 | A Companion | September 1 |
8 | More Mini Games | September 6 |
9 | Building Plus | September 10 |
10 | Character Editor | September 12 |
The character editor was not part of the original game plan. Square Glade Games introduced it as a stretch goal after receiving repeated requests from the community for appearance personalization. The concept artist drew additional body types during the campaign to show what the feature could look like, and the positive response cemented it as the final funding milestone. Since its announcement, the team has continued expanding the available options; the February 2026 demo update added more skin tone variety based on player feedback.
