Best Starter Tier List
This is a guide to the best starter Animon to pick in LumenTale: Memories of Trey. You choose your first Animon from five options: Mewaii, Vortail, Ozelash, Salabel, and Queccha. The ranking below is based on early-game performance and how each starter fares against the first bosses you face. It may shift as more of the game is explored.

Ozelash is the best starter to choose, thanks to its Electric typing being uncommon in the early game and the Furor trait that directly increases skill damage.
Starter Animon Ranked
1. Ozelash
Ozelash (No. 009) is an Electric Type with the Furor Attribute, whose trait directly increases skill damage. Few Electric Animon appear in the prologue or the first few areas until past Arsilia City if you head north, so having one early helps the team greatly. Electric attacks are effective against the first two bosses, Iotamor and Pymant, as well as the first Lumen Squadron leader Dena's Mollupom. You will find more Electric Animon deeper north around Voltar City, but none compare to Ozelash's line. See How to Get All Starters.
2. Queccha
Queccha (No. 017) is a Geo Type with the Sereum Attribute, whose trait increases crit chance and grants 1 extra TP per critical hit. Geo attacks are effective against the first two bosses Iotamor and Pymant, and the next boss Knequital if you go north. The Geo type deals effective damage to many early Animon, but this is offset by Queccha itself being weak to a lot of early enemies. It is a good choice, though not the best, since there is a strong non-starter alternative in Mollupom, an excellent Geo Animon you can catch during the prologue.
3. Mewaii
Mewaii (No. 001) is a Virus Type with the Felicis Attribute, whose trait lets it slightly heal allies after attacking. As a Virus Animon it is effective against the first two bosses Iotamor and Pymant and a few of Dena's Animon. Its impact is diluted because many early Animon you can catch already learn typical Virus attacks despite not being Virus types, so Mewaii does not add much move-type diversity.
4. Vortail
Vortail (No. 005) is an Aura Type with the Mestus Attribute, whose trait uses a percentage of its HP to deal additional damage. Vortail provides good early coverage in Aura and Water moves, which helps in regular Lumen battles where many enemies have at least one Animon weak to Aura or Water. However, it is not strong for key fights early on: it is weak against Pymant and Knequital (if you go north) and mostly neutral against other bosses and Lumen Squadron leaders.
5. Salabel
Salabel (No. 013) is a Demon Type with the Horrens Attribute, whose trait neutralizes an enemy's resistance and makes the next attack super effective if it would have defeated them. Salabel is the least recommended starter, mainly because few early Animon are weak to Demon and many resist it. Pymant and Knequital (if you go north) are weak to Demon, but overall Salabel has a tougher climb. If you want a Demon type for those fights, easy alternatives include the Demon/Fire types Deniuli or Boobat, or the Smellwing line.
