Weather Effects on Gameplay
Weather in inZOI is more than cosmetic. Rain, snow, heat, and seasonal changes directly influence Zoi behavior, health, clothing choices, crop yields, and even property damage. Understanding how the weather system works helps players keep their Zois healthy, protect their homes, and take advantage of seasonal opportunities across the game's three distinct city climates.
Weather Types and Intensity
inZOI features four base weather types. Three of them have three intensity levels, while Sunny has a single state. Weather transitions happen gradually with visual blending between states.
Weather Type | Intensity Levels | Visual Effects |
|---|---|---|
Sunny | 1 (Clear) | Bright lighting, clear skies, sharp shadows |
Cloudy | Light, Moderate, Heavy | Increasing cloud cover; reduced shadows at Heavy |
Rainy | Light Drizzle, Moderate Rain, Heavy Downpour | Puddles form at Moderate; flooding visuals at Heavy; wet clothing effects |
Snowy | Light Flurries, Moderate Snowfall, Heavy Blizzard | Snow accumulation on ground and rooftops; reduced visibility at Heavy |
Each intensity level affects gameplay differently. Light rain is mostly atmospheric, while Heavy Downpour saturates Zois' clothing, creates puddle splash effects, and accelerates the sickness timer. Heavy Blizzard conditions significantly reduce visibility and cause rapid temperature drops for Zois outdoors without proper clothing.
Seasons
The game follows a four-season cycle, with each season lasting seven in-game days. Seasons determine the baseline weather patterns, temperature ranges, and available seasonal events. The full cycle from Spring through Winter takes 28 in-game days.
Season | Duration | Typical Weather | Temperature Range |
|---|---|---|---|
Spring | 7 in-game days | Mix of Sunny and Rainy; pollen season | Mild; gradually warming |
Summer | 7 in-game days | Predominantly Sunny; occasional thunderstorms | Hot; heatwave risk above 30°C |
Autumn | 7 in-game days | Cloudy and Rainy; falling leaves | Cool; gradually cooling |
Winter | 7 in-game days | Snowy and Cloudy; frost effects | Cold; hypothermia risk in blizzards |
For more details on the day/night cycle and how time progresses, see the Time and Seasons article.
City Climate Differences
Each of inZOI's three main cities has a distinct climate profile that determines which weather patterns and seasons it experiences. This creates meaningfully different gameplay experiences depending on where a Zoi lives.
City | Climate Profile | Key Weather Features |
|---|---|---|
Temperate with four distinct seasons | Full range of weather; snow in winter, cherry blossoms in spring, hot summers | |
Warm year-round; mild seasonal variation | Rarely snows; frequent sunshine; occasional coastal storms | |
Tropical island climate | Warm and humid; tropical rain showers; no snow; monsoon-like heavy rain periods |
These climate differences mean that a Zoi living in Dowon needs a full seasonal wardrobe, while a Zoi in Bliss Bay or Cahaya can get by with lighter clothing most of the year. Crop growth timelines and disaster risks also vary by city.
Temperature and Clothing
Temperature is tracked as a gameplay variable that affects Zoi comfort and health. Zois respond to temperature changes by automatically switching their outfit to match the conditions, pulling from their wardrobe based on the current season and weather.
Automatic Clothing Changes
When the temperature shifts significantly, Zois autonomously change into appropriate clothing. In cold weather, they put on coats, scarves, and winter accessories. In hot weather, they switch to lighter outfits. This behavior is automatic and does not require player input, though players can manually override outfit choices through the wardrobe interface.
Wrong Clothing Consequences
If a Zoi is wearing clothing inappropriate for the current temperature, they suffer negative effects:
Too cold: The Zoi shivers visibly, walks with a hunched posture, and their Comfort need drops faster. Prolonged exposure without warm clothing can lead to sickness.
Too hot: The Zoi fans themselves, sweats visibly, and may develop heatstroke if the temperature exceeds 30°C for an extended period.
Sickness Mechanics
Weather is the primary driver of the sickness system in inZOI. Several types of illness can be contracted based on weather exposure, and each has distinct causes and symptoms.
Types of Weather-Related Illness
Illness | Cause | Symptoms |
|---|---|---|
Common Cold | Exposure to rain for 6+ continuous hours without an umbrella (post-v0.6.0 rebalance; previously 1 hour) | Sneezing, reduced energy, slower movement; contagious to other Zois |
Pollen Allergy | Being outdoors during Spring pollen season | Sneezing, watery eyes, discomfort moodlet; not contagious |
Heatstroke | Prolonged outdoor exposure when temperature exceeds 30°C | Dizziness, fatigue, risk of collapse; can lead to death if untreated |
The v0.6.0 update significantly rebalanced cold mechanics. Before the patch, Zois could catch a cold after just one hour of rain exposure, which many players felt was too punishing. The updated six-hour threshold makes colds a consequence of prolonged neglect rather than brief exposure.
Cold Contagion
Colds in inZOI are contagious. If a sick Zoi spends time near other Zois in close quarters, there is a chance the illness will spread. This makes managing a sick Zoi important in multi-Zoi households, as an untreated cold can cascade through the entire family. Keeping a sick Zoi at home and treating them promptly is the best way to prevent an outbreak.
Cures and Prevention
Item | Source | Cost | Effect |
|---|---|---|---|
First Aid Kit | Build Mode catalog | 100 Meow Coins | Place in home; Zois use it autonomously to cure colds and minor illnesses |
Vaccine Donut | In-game purchase | 100 Meow Coins | Consumable that grants permanent immunity to colds for that Zoi |
Umbrella | Umbrella Stand (Build Mode furniture) | Varies by stand design | Zois grab an umbrella from the stand when leaving home in rain; prevents rain exposure sickness timer |
The First Aid Kit is a reusable furniture item. Once placed in a Zoi's home, any sick Zoi in the household will autonomously walk to the kit and use it to cure themselves. The Vaccine Donut is a one-time consumable that permanently prevents colds for a single Zoi, making it a worthwhile investment for Zois who spend significant time outdoors.
Umbrella System
Umbrellas function through the Umbrella Stand furniture item placed in Build Mode. When a Zoi is about to leave home during rainy weather, they will automatically grab an umbrella from the stand near the door. The umbrella protects them from rain exposure, preventing the sickness timer from accumulating. If no Umbrella Stand is placed, or if the Zoi leaves from an exit without a nearby stand, they go out without protection.
Rain and Snow Visual Effects
Weather states produce detailed visual effects on both the environment and Zoi characters:
Wet clothing: During rain, Zoi clothing gradually becomes visually wet with darkened fabric and dripping effects. The wetness level increases with rain intensity and exposure duration.
Puddle splashing: At Moderate Rain and above, puddles form on streets and paths. Zois splash through them while walking, creating particle effects.
Snow accumulation: During snowfall, snow gradually builds up on the ground, rooftops, cars, and outdoor furniture. The accumulation increases with snowfall duration and intensity.
Frost and ice: In Winter, windows develop frost patterns, and water features can freeze over visually.
Breath visibility: In cold temperatures, Zois' breath becomes visible as small vapor clouds.
Natural Disasters
inZOI features a natural disaster system that introduces periodic extreme weather events. These disasters go beyond normal weather and can cause property damage, crop loss, and health emergencies.
Disaster | Effects | Duration |
|---|---|---|
Heavy Rain / Flooding | Excessive rain causes localized flooding; damages ground-level crops; Zois forced indoors | Several in-game hours |
Heatwave | Sustained extreme temperatures; increased heatstroke risk; crops wilt faster; higher energy consumption indoors | 1 to 3 in-game days |
Dust Storm / Yellow Dust | Reduced visibility; damages outdoor crops; Zois experience respiratory discomfort outdoors; clothing gets dusty | Several in-game hours |
Crop Damage
Natural disasters can devastate gardens and farming operations. Heavy rain floods garden plots, dust storms coat plants and inhibit growth, and heatwaves cause rapid wilting. Players who invest heavily in gardening should monitor weather forecasts and consider purchasing Natural Disaster insurance to offset losses.
Insurance System
inZOI offers an insurance system that helps protect against weather-related financial losses. Three insurance types are available:
Insurance Type | Coverage |
|---|---|
Natural Disaster Insurance | Covers property damage and crop loss from weather events |
Death Insurance | Provides financial payout to surviving household members |
Property Insurance | Covers general property damage beyond weather events |
Insurance is purchased through the in-game services menu. Natural Disaster Insurance is the most relevant for weather-related gameplay, as it reimburses the cost of damaged crops and any property repairs needed after a disaster event. For more information on the death system, see the Deaths article.
Indoor Temperature
Introduced in the v0.5.0 update, the indoor temperature system tracks heat and cold inside Zoi homes separately from outdoor conditions. Indoor temperature is influenced by:
Outdoor weather: Extreme outdoor temperatures gradually affect indoor temperature if the home lacks climate control.
Heating and cooling appliances: Placing heaters, air conditioners, and fireplaces in Build Mode helps regulate indoor temperature. These appliances consume electricity and increase utility bills.
Insulation: Higher-quality wall and window materials provide better insulation, slowing the rate at which outdoor temperatures penetrate indoors.
Open doors and windows: Leaving doors or windows open accelerates temperature equalization with the outdoors.
Maintaining comfortable indoor temperature is important for Zoi well-being. If the indoor temperature drops too low or rises too high, Zois experience the same comfort penalties as being outdoors in extreme weather. A well-equipped home with proper heating and cooling is one of the best defenses against weather-related discomfort.
Weather Customization
Players have two methods for overriding the natural weather cycle:
Edit City (Temporary Override)
Through the City Editor's "Edit City" mode, players can manually set the current weather to any type and intensity level. This override is temporary and reverts to the natural weather cycle after approximately one in-game hour. It is useful for photography sessions, testing specific weather conditions, or simply enjoying a preferred atmosphere for a short time.
Cheat Commands
For players who want more control, inZOI provides console cheat commands related to weather:
Command | Effect |
|---|---|
controlWeather | Opens a weather control panel allowing the player to set weather type, intensity, and duration |
controlDisaster | Triggers or disables natural disaster events on demand |
Using cheat commands does not disable achievements or progression in inZOI. These commands are provided as sandbox tools for players who prefer full control over their world's conditions.
Weather and Seasonal Events
Certain seasonal events are tied to specific weather conditions or seasons. Weather plays a role in setting the atmosphere for these events and may influence event-specific activities.
Event | Season | Weather Connection |
|---|---|---|
Holiday Festival | Winter | Snow-themed decorations and activities; best experienced during snowfall |
Halloween | Autumn | Cloudy and foggy atmospheric effects enhance the spooky theme |
Lunar New Year | Winter/Spring transition | Fireworks and festivities tied to the seasonal changeover |
Weather during these events is not locked; a Holiday Festival can occur on a clear Winter day. However, the event's visual presentation is enhanced when the natural weather aligns with the theme.
Patch History
Weather mechanics have been refined across several updates since Early Access launch:
Version | Change |
|---|---|
v0.5.0 | Added indoor temperature tracking system; heating and cooling appliances gain functional significance |
v0.6.0 | Rebalanced cold sickness timer from 1 hour to 6 hours of continuous rain exposure; reduced frequency of pollen allergy triggers in Spring |
These changes reflect Krafton's ongoing commitment to making weather impactful without being overly punishing. The v0.6.0 cold rebalance in particular was a direct response to community feedback about sickness being too frequent in rainy cities like Dowon.
