Overview

Rulebreaker is one of 18 traits in inZOI. It belongs to the Playful and Cruel category. Traits are chosen during character creation and cannot be changed afterward. The single trait shapes how the Zoi behaves autonomously, which emotions they lean toward, how quickly their needs decay, and how they interact with other Zois.

Rulebreakers shine brightest when bringing chaos to society. They defy social norms, push boundaries, and embrace situations that more conservative Zois would avoid. The trait is mechanically tied to the v0.5.0 crime system: a Rulebreaker Zoi (alongside Zois with the Malicious characteristic) can unlock the criminal interaction set, including Pick Door Lock, Break Down Door, Open Safe, Sabotage Surveillance Camera, and Steal.

Version History

Rulebreaker was introduced in the v0.4.0 update (October 30, 2025) under the original name "Outlaw". The trait was renamed to Rulebreaker in the v0.5.0 (December 23, 2025) update.

The Rulebreaker trait replaces the older Collaborator trait. Existing save files with the Collaborator trait had it automatically converted to Rulebreaker when the v0.4.0 update was applied. The replacement is a thematic shift, not a one-to-one carryover; Rulebreaker fills a related but distinct slot in the mentality framework.

The original v0.4.0 in-game display name was "Outlaw". The name remained "Outlaw" through the v0.4.5 hotfix on November 26, 2025. The rename to Rulebreaker took effect with v0.5.0 (December 23, 2025).

Behavioral Notes

• Rulebreaker shares the Playful and Cruel category with Troublemaker.

• Beginning with the v0.4.5 hotfix on November 26, 2025, Outlaw Zois (the previous name) no longer perform the Steal interaction autonomously. The Steal action requires direct player input. This behavior carries over to Rulebreaker after the v0.5.0 rename.

• Rulebreaker is the primary trait gateway into the crime system. Zois without this trait or the Malicious characteristic do not see crime interactions in the action menu by default.

Mentality System Context

The v0.4.0 update unified traits, characteristics, ambitions, and urges into a single cohesive personality framework. The trait sets the foundational personality, while characteristics layer on as secondary modifiers, ambitions provide long-term goals, and urges drive moment-to-moment autonomous decisions.

As a v0.4.0+ trait, Rulebreaker works within this unified framework. It influences which urges surface, which emotions are felt more often or persist longer, and which Desired Lives align with the Zoi's natural inclinations.

Selecting This Trait

To select Rulebreaker, choose it from the trait list during Create a Zoi. Each Zoi has one trait that cannot be changed after creation, so consider how the trait will shape long-term gameplay before committing.

Players who used the older Collaborator trait in pre-v0.4.0 saves had their existing Zois automatically converted to Rulebreaker when applying the update. The conversion is permanent; there is no option to revert to the older trait.
