Overview
Guan Yu is a warrior-class hero in Honor of Kings: World. Based on the legendary general from the Three Kingdoms period of Chinese history, Guan Yu wields the Dragon Moon Blade (a guandao-style polearm (his original Honor of Kings MOBA weapon is called "Soaring Green Dragon")) and is inseparable from Red Hare, an automaton horse that requires no food and can run infinitely. Guan Yu serves as a tank/fighter specializing in balanced offense and defense, with unique horseback combat that rewards continuous movement.
Historical inspiration
The historical Guan Yu (died 220 CE) was a military general serving under the warlord Liu Bei during the late Eastern Han dynasty and Three Kingdoms period. One of Liu Bei's sworn brothers, he was deified as the God of War in Chinese folk religion. His signature weapon, the Green Dragon Crescent Blade (a type of guandao), and his red horse Red Hare are inseparable from his legend.
In the game's lore, Guan Yu is portrayed as a mighty general and demon hunter. Red Hare is reimagined as a mechanical automaton. A steam-and-Flow-powered horse that blends the mythic imagery with the game's technology-infused setting.
Charge Stance mechanic
Guan Yu's defining combat mechanic is the Charge Stance. His movement builds charge, after covering enough distance (2000 units of continuous movement in the MOBA version), Guan Yu enters the Charge Stance, which dramatically enhances his attacks. This creates a unique rhythm where Guan Yu players benefit from staying mobile rather than standing still, using sweeping ride-by attacks rather than static combos.
When stationary, Guan Yu has access to passive, defensive, and buffing skills. When in momentum, his abilities shift to more offensive variations with knockback and charge effects. This duality between stationary defense and mobile aggression gives Guan Yu a distinctive combat feel among the warrior-class heroes.
Combat abilities
Guan Yu's abilities are adapted from his Honor of Kings MOBA kit, translated into the action RPG context:
Item | Description |
|---|---|
Rider of Triumph (passive) | movement speed increases incrementally as Guan Yu covers distance. After sufficient continuous movement, enters Charge Stance with enhanced attack power |
Heroic Charge | in Charge Stance, charges forward knocking back enemies, then follows with a powerful forward slash dealing heavy physical damage |
Soaring Green Dragon | removes control effects and increases movement speed. In Charge Stance, leaps forward to knock back enemies, named after his legendary weapon |
Razor Cavalry (ultimate) | reduces the charge preparation distance by 75% for a limited duration. In Charge Stance, summons cavalry to charge forward in a devastating mounted assault |
Red Hare automaton
Red Hare is an automaton that requires no food and can run infinitely. Guan Yu rides Red Hare constantly, and they are inseparable. In the original MOBA, if the horse dies, Guan Yu dies. In the open world, Red Hare functions as both a combat component and a traversal mount, with horseback abilities like the Dragon Moon Blade strikes providing a unique mounted combat experience unavailable to other heroes.
Role in the story
In Primaera's lore, Guan Yu is a revered warrior whose legacy is preserved through the Flow style system. The Flowborn can channel his fighting techniques through the Flow system. His story within the game explores themes of loyalty and honor that mirror his historical reputation as one of Liu Bei's sworn brothers.
