The player character in Grave Seasons carries a small set of tools that cover farming, resource gathering, and investigation. They are surfaced through a tool wheel that includes the standard farm sim toolkit alongside a Crime category for breaking-and-entering. Tools can be improved by visiting the town blacksmith.
Standard Tools
The studio's farming devlog lists the kit the player arrives with as a shovel, a pickaxe, an axe, a watering can, and the crowbar. Hands-on coverage of the public demo build referred to the digging tool as a hoe instead, so both names are in circulation for the same job.
Tool | Category | Use |
|---|---|---|
Shovel | Farm | Digs up the land to open a plot for planting. Used during Farming. |
Watering Can | Farm | Waters planted crops. Refilled at a hand pump on the farm. Crops in wet plots do not need it. |
Axe | Farm | Chops trees for wood and clears overgrown areas of the farm. |
Pickaxe | Farm | Breaks rocks and is the primary mining tool. See Fishing and Mining. |
Crowbar | Crime | Pries open locked doors and containers around town. Used for Investigation and Clues, and tied to the player character's escaped-convict background. |
The Blacksmith
Ashenridge's resident blacksmith, Jade, upgrades farm tools and the crowbar. The watering can, the digging tool, and the crowbar have all been called out as upgrade targets, and the developers have said every tool has room to become better in the player's hands. Working with Jade is the main path for increasing tool reach, durability, and efficiency over the course of a playthrough.
The Carpenter
Tools and buildings are handled by different people. Jade keeps the tools in shape, while her wife Xia is the town carpenter and the one to see about improving farm buildings. Their daughter Marina apprentices at the shop and can usually be found helping out. See The Farm for the structures on the property.
Crafted Equipment
Beyond the basic wheel, the crafting system can produce additional gear and consumables. Items confirmed to be craftable include thread, flasks, and the crowbar itself. Some crafted goods are precious wares meant specifically to ward off the supernatural threat stalking the town. See Crafting and Cooking for the full crafting picture.
