Grave Seasons features a cast of named townsfolk who live and work in Ashenridge, part of a town populated by over 40 fully scheduled characters. Each of the 20 named residents has a job, a personality, a home, and secrets. Because the killer is randomly chosen each playthrough from a subset of the cast, any of these residents could turn out to be the supernatural serial killer, and many can also be befriended or romanced. See Romance and Relationships and The Murder Mystery.
The Player Character
The player controls a customizable newcomer who arrives in Ashenridge after escaping from jail. The player can customize their character's appearance, hair, skin tone, and choose their gender before settling into farming life and the investigation. Because the player character is an escaped convict, asking the police for help is never an option. See The Player Character for the protagonist's background and the mechanics tied to their fugitive status.

The Killer Pool
The killer is drawn randomly from a subset of the 20 named townsfolk at the start of each playthrough, and the same player will not see the same killer twice in a row. Some of the romance candidates sit inside the killer pool, which makes it possible to unknowingly romance the murderer. Mayor Fitch is confirmed as a potential victim across runs, not a possible killer.
