Rifts are a recurring world event added in the Nightling Update. Mysterious portals to the demonic world of Niflel open across Siagarta, and it falls to the Farseekers to push the invaders back before they overrun the land. Rifts are the first of a planned series of world events, and they mark a change of pace from the game's usual small-group loop.
How Rifts Work

About once an hour, a warning announces that a Rift has opened somewhere in Skover Island or the Valley of Eternal Autumn. A group of up to a dozen players enters the demon realm together. Inside, Nightlings and their Nightlords stream in from multiple gates. The objective is a timed run: close as many gates as possible, and keep clearing the foes that pour through, until the Rift's boss appears. The more gates a group closes, the better the reward at the end. Once an event has begun the entrance closes, so latecomers wait for the next hour.
Scaling
Rifts are built to take whoever turns up. Below the level cap the event adjusts to each participant's level, so a level 10 player and a level 20 player contribute equally rather than one carrying the other. It also scales continuously with the size of the crowd, including downward if players leave partway through, and both bosses size their health bars to the number of participants.
Rewards and Currency
Closing gates earns a unique Rift currency, banked as resources such as Demonic Souls, Nightblood, and Soulstones. These are spent with the Demon Hunter, a merchant who trades them for demonic weapons and gear sets, spark crystals, demonic upgrades, and cosmetic Mounts and Gliders and Companions. Soulstones have a second use: they summon tougher Nightlords in hidden corners of Siagarta.
Enemies and Bosses
The Rifts are fought against the Nightlings, a family of shadow demons, together with their elite Nightlords and Nightking commanders. Two Rift bosses are live. The Nightqueen Shaarlize Te'Ror fights through illusions: she teleports to players trailing damaging clouds, spawns Guardians when someone runs into one of those clouds, and throws Chaos Orbs the group has to send back at her. Maat Demon is the blunter of the pair, a Nightking whose great axe, the Worldsplitter, is known across Niflel. Both bosses fight at level 25, the current cap. For the full demon roster, see Nightlings.
