Ahead of its Early Access launch, Ember and Blade has been playable through a free demo that has grown steadily over time. The demo began as a focused slice of combat and expanded across later builds into a much fuller showcase, adding new stages, bosses, weapons, and progression systems. It has also served as a way for the studio to gather player feedback during early development. This page traces how the demo evolved.
The July 2025 Steam Demo
The first free demo launched on Steam on July 17, 2025, offering up to roughly two hours of combat. It gave players an early hands-on with the game's core loop of cutting through demon hordes and facing patterned bosses. This initial release established the foundation that later updates would build on.
The Expanded Festival Build of Fall 2025

The demo was expanded into a larger vertical-slice build for a major festival showcase in the fall of 2025, and a demo launch trailer debuted as part of a fall fan-fest event. This build added new stages, bosses, and more advanced weapon mechanics, moving well beyond the scope of the original two-hour demo. It notably featured the narrative-packed Acts, which introduced two new angels and a new boss.
The Arbor's Crucible and November Update
The festival build also added a dedicated survival mode, The Arbor's Crucible. This is an endless-survival arena in which players try to last as long as possible against infinitely-spawning demons to earn points, offered as a festival-exclusive experience. A further update arrived in November 2025 alongside this mode, continuing the demo's run of regular updates.
The Rune and Arcana Updates
Across its update history, the demo also introduced two of the game's progression systems. The Runes system, which lets players enhance their weapons, and the Arcana combinations were both added through demo updates, along with combat improvements. These additions let demo players experiment with the deeper build-crafting that will feature in the full game. How they fit together is covered under Progression and Builds.
The Act 3 Boss Fight and the Gauntlet
In February 2026, the studio released a video built around the Act 3 boss fight, which also introduced a new weapon, the Gauntlet. The same video carried early prototype footage of a further boss still in development. This continued to broaden the game's content and combat options ahead of Early Access. The footage was presented as work in progress, so the finer details may still shift before release. More context is on the Acts page.
Trying the Demo on Steam and Epic
The demo has been distributed during development as a way to experience the game before its paid Early Access launch. For the full release schedule and where the game will be available, see Release and Platforms. For trailers and other media, see Media and Trailers.
The 2026 Update Cadence and April Meta-Systems Build
Across 2026 the playable demo kept receiving staged updates rather than sitting still. These passes layered in clarity fixes, deeper progression, and smoother combat over several rounds, building toward a larger meta-systems update. The cadence shows the demo being actively iterated on in the run-up to Early Access, with community feedback feeding directly into each round.
The most substantial of these landed on April 28, 2026. On top of the Runes and Arcana systems, that update added Rifts to the field, encounters that let a player gain additional Arcana and adjust a build mid-run. Combat was tightened as well, headlined by a reworked Baphomet fight with new attack patterns, clearer telegraphs, and stronger hit reactions. The update also delivered a full overhaul of the voiceover lines in response to player feedback, replacing the demo's spoken dialogue with re-recorded performances. Together these changes made the demo a meaningfully deeper slice than the original July 2025 build.
The June 2026 Combat Rebuild
In June 2026 the studio's director, credited as J. Kim, shared a note titled where the game was headed, announcing that the next demo would go well beyond bug fixes and balance passes by rebuilding combat itself. Looking back across the project, the team traced a steady drift from a slower, more traditional survivors-like toward faster, more active play, with blessings shifting from passive effects toward mechanics tied to dashes and attacks. The note framed the rebuild as finally committing to that direction, and asked players for feedback on two major changes in the upcoming demo. The first is a combo system built around light and heavy attacks, meant to give each encounter more rhythm and decision-making. The second turns blessings from passive effects into active ones tied to light attacks, heavy attacks, and dashes, so a player shapes how a blessing fires rather than waiting for it. Early proof-of-concept footage was shown using existing assets, with the studio stressing it did not represent the final quality. This marks the most significant planned change to the demo since the April 2026 build.
Reception and the Final Demo
The rebuilding rounds worked. The free demo carries a Very Positive rating on its Steam page, with 463 reviews and about five in six of them positive, and the studio's own roadmap credits that rating to the four rounds of refinement between February and April 2026.
One more demo is planned. The roadmap places a final demo in the third quarter of 2026, described as the last build before paid release and aimed at deepening both the action and the Blessings system while clearing up the quality-of-life issues players raised. After that the game moves to Early Access in Q4 2026, so the demo line stops there rather than continuing alongside the paid build.
The roadmap also fills in what the autumn 2025 festival build actually added: Act 2, the boss Arcanus the Faceless, the meta progression layer, and Shay's Hideout. That build was featured on the Epic Games Store at the same time as its Steam showcase.
First Look at the Rebuilt Combat
The rebuild stopped being a promise in August 2026. On the twelfth the studio posted a short clip of the combo system running in the game, describing it as dynamic, seamless combo attacks coming to the core combat system and asking players what they made of it. It is the first time the change announced in the June note has been shown rather than described, which matters because the note had framed the whole rebuild around player feedback. A few days earlier the studio had also shown the Sanctuary Room, the safe haven a player returns to mid-adventure, with Keke hammering away at the forge and a reminder to stop there before taking on the next boss.
The Next Demo: 3 September 2026
The rebuilt demo has a date. A developer note published on 20 August 2026 states that players will be able to try the results of the combat rebuild in an upcoming demo releasing on 3 September, which is the first firm day the studio has given for any build since the April 2026 update and lands inside the third-quarter window the roadmap had promised. It is the build that carries the combo system and the active Blessings announced in June, so it is the first chance to play the version of combat the studio committed to rather than watch clips of it.
That same note is the most detailed technical account the team has published, written by the technical director rather than the game director. It sets out how the game keeps a thousand enemies on screen without collapsing, and it closes by saying that good optimisation should go unnoticed. Its contents are covered on Development and Technology. The note also confirms that the studio presented the same material publicly at a Unity developer conference in Seoul in July 2026.
