Arcana is one of the progression systems in Ember and Blade. It centers on combinations and sits alongside Blessings, Awakening Skills, and weapon-enhancing Runes as part of how a build comes together.
What Is Arcana
Arcana has been described as a system of combinations that contributes to character power. Like the Rune System, it was introduced as part of the ongoing updates to the playable demo earlier in development. Because it arrived as a demo update rather than a fully detailed launch feature, this page describes its role in the design rather than asserting specific mechanics, named arcana, or stat numbers, none of which have been published.
Arcana Combinations
The defining idea is combination. Where Blessings are offered as choices that reshape a run, Arcana is framed around pairing or stacking elements to build out Fenrix's capabilities. The exact way combinations are formed, and what each one does, has not been laid out publicly, so the focus here is on the concept rather than a fixed list.
Theorycrafting Builds
Arcana is one of the four named pillars under Progression and Builds, and its appeal lies in how it interacts with the other systems. Combining Arcana with Runes, Awakening Skills, and the run-defining Blessings is meant to support flexible, varied builds and reward experimentation. As with the other newer progression layers, detailed theorycrafting will become possible once a more complete build is available to play.
Confirmed Function and Rifts
A later demo update gave Arcana a clearer in-game role. Arcana can be stacked to shape powerful builds, acting as a layer of customization that sits on top of the rest of the progression systems. The intended payoff is the same combination-driven build variety the page describes: stacking the right Arcana steers how a run develops.
That update also introduced Rifts to the field. Rifts are encounters that appear during a run and give the player a chance to gain additional Arcana mid-run, letting a build be adjusted on the fly rather than only at fixed moments. This makes Arcana something a run can keep growing into, not just a one-time choice. Rifts are covered in the context of a full run on The Run Loop. As with the other systems, the exact catalogue of Arcana and their individual effects has not been published, so this page still describes the role rather than a fixed list.
Arcana Card Count and Types
A demo update detailed the Arcana lineup more concretely. That update added 54 Arcana cards, split into 10 Major Arcana and 44 Minor Arcana. Major Arcana set the core direction of a build with strong effects that often carry trade-offs or conditions, while Minor Arcana support and round out a build, adding flexibility and synergy that can come with their own penalties. The card pool is described as something the developers keep tuning based on gameplay data, so the exact list and effects continue to shift between builds.
Arcana modify core actions rather than acting as standalone powers. They change how Blessings, primary and secondary weapons, and dashes behave, and some Arcana grow stronger when paired together, which is what pushes players toward experimenting with synergies instead of leaning on one dominant setup.
Acquiring and Equipping Arcana
There are two confirmed ways to pick up Arcana during a run. Random Rifts can appear across the map, and stepping into one rewards Arcana. Arcana can also be obtained at Shay's Hideout after defeating a semi-boss. A run can hold up to four Arcana equipped at once, so part of the decision is choosing which cards to keep as the run develops.
