Dialogue Choices

Expanded practical gameplay guidance
Dialogue choices in The Blood of Dawnwalker can change who survives, which routes remain open and how much time Coen spends. An hourglass beside a response marks a time cost. Read the response before committing: continuing a conversation, choosing a fight and agreeing to a bargain can have different consequences.
Situation | Choice and result |
|---|---|
Brencis's parley at Shrike's Crag | Following him deeper commits Coen to a tradeoff. Accepting the bargain saves the family by betraying allies; rejecting it and winning the fight leaves the family dead. The separate castle rescue routes avoid this parley commitment. |
Betraying an ally | The betrayal bargain leads to The Turncoat. Brencis has no ally to demand if Coen has not gained one. With Lacra present, accepting the offer ends her route before the duel. |
Catalin in Fall Before Dusk | Choose No! Stop! to save Catalin and keep Crake alive. Silence or an expired timer lets Brencis kill Catalin. In that case, Crake survives only if Coen spared the soldiers at the castle gate earlier. |
Inviting Brencis | After defeating him, continue the conversation rather than dismissing him. Agree that he freed Coen, then choose Come with me. I invite you. This changes his presence in the epilogue without changing the ending already reached. |
An invitation into Coen's mind follows the defeated vampire's Anachora conversation. It keeps a voice inside Coen; it does not leave that vampire physically alive. Brencis can turn the invited boyars' power against Coen during the final fight.
Decision | Consequence |
|---|---|
Leave the mill soldiers alive | Renna is killed while Coen is away dealing with Mert. Killing the soldiers before leaving lets her survive. |
Report Friedo and Cerbus | Get Trader Yenno to identify his suppliers, then report them to the Post Commander. This gives permission to visit Mert and 75 XP. Blackmailing Friedo directly also secures a visit but skips that XP. |
Free Mert | Take the Prison Key behind Friedo. Opening the cell makes a nearby guard hostile. The lit alcove on the north side leads through two locked doors to a side exit, avoiding most of the camp. |
Miss Mert's deadline | He is hanged if Coen does not speak to him within four days of receiving the objective. Compel Soul on his corpse, using the Wedding Ring from a nearby tent sack, can still reveal the next lead. |
Speaking to Mert opens the lead to Shadows in the Woods. Rescuing him also keeps his later Svartrau appearance and extra dialogue with Crake available.
Decision | Consequence |
|---|---|
Give Leonica's notes to Anca | During Echoes of Silenced Bells, the ritual costs one segment and removes the nuns from the immediate post-quest route through St. Tyna's Grove. The epilogue also describes the lifting of the fog as releasing the nuns from the convent. |
Burn the notes | Anca cannot complete that ritual and the nuns remain in the grove. The epilogue describes the fog continuing to spread. |
Keep St. Tyna's Relic | Fight the soldiers to open the library route while retaining the amulet. Handing it over gives passage without that fight but loses the relic. |
Deal with Andrei directly | The fight kills Andrei and skips the later guard distraction and hex objectives. Coen still receives the Broad Swing manual. |
Follow Ocha's spell plan | Take Andrei's Ring while he is distracted. Give it to Ocha, open the pig pen to distract the guard and draw the hex beside Andrei's window. The spell kills him. |
Bring the wrong memento | The spell fails. If Coen intervenes when Nora is threatened, she can survive the fight. Staying hidden allows her death before Coen and Ocha fight. |
After the investigation exposes Vicho, the conversation can end in his death or a promise that Coen will supply blood. To keep him alive, acknowledge what happened, discourage his suicide and offer a way for him to help others without hunting people.
Order | Dialogue intention |
|---|---|
1 | Ask Vicho to discuss the investigation. |
2 | Ask whether he remembers what happened. |
3 | Explain the evidence identifying him as the killer. |
4 | Express sympathy for what happened to him. |
5 | Interrupt his attempt to kill himself. |
6 | Suggest using his condition to benefit others. |
7 | Encourage him to help people. |
8 | Assure him of Coen's support. |
9 | I'll provide you with blood. |
10 | From blood transports. |
11 | Reject the idea that he is a monster. |
Keeping the promise is an ongoing obligation. When The Unquenchable Thirst appears, deliver the requested blood before the following morning or Vicho dies. Simply avoiding the confrontation leaves him alive but allows further murders to remain unresolved.
During A Friend Like This, ask Nish for his account, acknowledge the harm Brencis has done and promise help. Learn the village location before deciding whether to release him. Freeing him after the conversation gives a later dialogue scene; allowing Lacra to kill him leaves Uriash's Blood to loot. If he dies before speaking, return in daytime and use Compel Soul with the nearby Uriash Trinket. That route gets the information but leaves his body unavailable for looting.
At the end of Our Rotten Roots, inviting Isbrand adds occasional dialogue inside Coen's mind. Leaving him in Anachora does not cost Piercing Shriek: the ability is received after either choice. Asking Lacra to take him prompts her explanation and returns to the same decision.
Blood cellar | Destroy the barrels | Collect the blood |
|---|---|---|
Trouble Brewing | 500 XP and 2 skill points | 250 XP and 1 skill point |
Seeing Red | 500 XP and 1 skill point | 250 XP and 1 skill point |
Uninvited | 500 XP and 1 skill point | 250 XP and 2 Kobold's Blood |
The leech collectors' decisions work differently. Keeping or destroying their barrels gives the same listed quest rewards: 250 XP and 1 skill point, plus 6 Blood Leeches for Unsavoury Solutions, 8 for Wetland Helpers or 13 for Bounty of the Mire. Letting the workers keep the barrels in Unsavoury Solutions prevents them from siding with the soldiers during the later encounters. Destroying the barrels during Wetland Helpers or Bounty of the Mire leads to a fight with the workers.
The Chief Jailor in Evil and Convenience offers the Hidden Stash treasure map for his freedom. Defeating him or feeding on him at night also leaves the map to loot; feeding raises Corruption. The map is needed to access the stash and finish the activity. Its contents include an Amulet of Endurance, a Recipe for Minor Keen Eye Potion, a Letter from Bakir and 60 Denarii.
At the end of In the Name of the Father, accepting Father Florin's offer and finishing A Hero's End opens his shortcut into Greifberg Castle. Walking away allows Coen to return and accept later. Killing Florin removes that shortcut.
Endings. The Gilded Gauntlet. The Lunar Game. The Cycle of Love. Quest System. Court Activities.
Situation | Options and consequences |
|---|---|
Anca's herb payment | Pay 50 Denarii, negotiate down to 25, or take the herbs on credit. Credit leaves a 50 Denarii repayment available during Where Old Devils Lie; paying 25 settles the purchase immediately. |
Ludwig in Bad Blood | Talking to him commits one time segment to helping, but he still dies of his injuries. Passing him avoids that interaction. |
Kostel's wound | Pressing the wound or refusing does not prevent Coen from giving in to his hunger. |
The Blood Mass protest | This is sick draws a warning from Pieter. Silence or an expired timer continues the ceremony without that exchange. The choice does not decide Esme's fate. |
Tonis during Good Home | Bring Beer or Wine to continue the conversation without a time cost. Helping him chop wood instead costs three segments. |
Klaus in Roadside Surprise | Dissuading him sends him home. Encouraging him leaves a later letter about him in Crake's office. The night feeding response raises Corruption. The quest rewards do not depend on this decision. |
Near the end of What Moves the Dead, walking the injured Crake back to the hideout costs one segment and shows Coen treating his wounds. Letting him return on his own ends the quest without that scene. Later, during A Closer Look, reciprocating his kiss starts his romance scene. Refusing advances the quest and saves a segment without closing Rise at Dawn or Crake's ending route.
Ring | Decision |
|---|---|
Farkas's ring from Bakir's treasury | Returning it to Farkas ends with him accidentally killing his brother. Giving it to Anca costs two segments and yields Quick Fighter's Ring. Giving it to Bakr-Erga or Sanzhani Tsarina also costs two segments and gives an endurance amulet for a vampiric build. After choosing another recipient, visit Farkas in Parlita to explain that the ring cannot heal his brother. |
Mysterious Ring in Lost Blood | Admitting that Coen has the ring gives the merchant a chance to offer to buy it; admitting possession does not force the sale. Keeping it retains its stamina, weapon damage and damage against supernatural enemies bonuses. Declining to return it does not remove the merchant or the normal quest completion reward. |
During The Bittersweet Toast, adding the lizard gland protects Iulian against the poison. Finishing the brew without it leaves that poison fatal to him. The optional ingredient changes his later fate rather than whether Coen finishes brewing. It does not protect him from being killed by another character during the duel scene.
Razkovniche Elixir method | Cost and preparation |
|---|---|
Brew it yourself | No time or Denarii fee. Read the recipe, then supply 1 Razkovniche Plant, 2 Tatzelwurm Glands and 1 Strong Ancient Reagent. |
Ask Anca | 1 segment, no Denarii fee. Bring the plant; Anca supplies the other ingredients and the scene adds dialogue. |
Ask a medic | 1 segment and 100 Denarii. Bring the plant; the medic supplies the other ingredients. |
The elixir can be crafted once. It grants 20% maximum human health, 10% maximum vampiric health and one skill point. The plant comes from The Hedgehog Herb: recover the recipe and seeds in the dead alchemist's house, learn his instructions through Compel Soul, plant a seed with Coen's blood and return the next day.
Each completed Sanzhani quest unlocks another question for Lunka. All five questions can be asked in any order. Complete Good Home, Come Hither, Burrow Sorrows, Pearly and Precious and Tiny Dancer, then return to Tsarina at Yawning Burrow to send the remaining questions. Advancing one full day delivers the replies to Coen's inventory; read each one to complete the exchange. Ask Tsarina about the special reward after all five quests for an additional day on the clock.
Situation | Outcome |
|---|---|
Layos | During Where Loyalty Lies, loot and read Orders: Middens after the soldiers attack near Boyan. Choose the explicit unwitting-informant response when reporting to Crake. Saying only that Layos seems innocent does not present the proof. Establishing his innocence does not stop his punishment. |
Sara | Asking Crake about Sara opens more dialogue about his guilt. Both responses continue What Hunts the Night and retain the later resting scene. |
Branko | Freeing the informant lets him betray the other inmates. Keeping him imprisoned leaves him to die there. Documents at the outpost and the later woodcutter camp report establish his role. Both branches list three time segments. |
Ocha's future | Home-focused replies send her back to the village. Replies favoring new experiences can keep her in the city. Travel becomes an option after fighting Andrei and his men rather than using the spell plan. Each outcome continues the Matriarch's quest and can award The Outcast. |
If Coen skipped Volk's chores or refused the treasure hunt in Buried Past, their later confrontation can end with Volk's Sword and 200 Denarii after killing him, or no loot if Coen spares him and finds him dead the next day. Refusing the treasure a second time immediately at his hut is a different branch: he attacks there, and the reward is the sword plus 100 Denarii.
