Overview

Shakatu is a goblin merchant who appears as an NPC in Crimson Desert. He is a returning character from Black Desert Online, where he was a prominent trader and namesake of a desert town in the Kingdom of Valencia. In Crimson Desert, Shakatu appears as a hooded goblin who approaches Kliff during the Goldleaf quest line, offering money and his merchant services in exchange for help deposing a corrupt leader. He is one of several characters that Pearl Abyss has carried between the two games as "homages and little Easter eggs" for BDO players.

Quest involvement

Shakatu's primary quest involvement was shown during the official 50-minute gameplay preview. After Kliff defeats a group of Goldleaf soldiers in combat, Shakatu appears as a hooded goblin and walks alongside Kliff. He explains that the Goldleaf Merchants, a goblin guild, are currently under the command of an oppressive leader named Split Horn, the branchmaster of the Goldleafs. Shakatu asks Kliff to challenge Split Horn to a duel.

In return, he offers Kliff money and his merchant services, which Kliff believes will be useful in locating the missing members of the Greymanes. The quest ties together multiple narrative threads: helping Shakatu regain influence within the Goldleaves, completing a task set by the local peacekeeper, and gaining resources to aid Kliff's search for his scattered companions.

After Kliff defeats Split Horn, Shakatu takes over leadership of the Goldleaf Merchants. The goblin guards under Split Horn's command are known to use red mist as part of their battle tactics during the encounter. With Split Horn deposed, the Goldleafs transition from a hostile faction to a more peaceful trading operation, and Shakatu's vendor services become available to the player.

Merchant services

As a merchant, Shakatu deals in inventory distinct from standard town vendors. His stock is described as including uncommon and rare items not readily available elsewhere. Players seeking unusual or hard-to-find goods may benefit from Shakatu's services after completing his quest. The exact scope of his inventory (specific item names, pricing, restock behavior) has not been fully detailed in pre-launch coverage.

Standard merchants in Crimson Desert sell consumables, resources, equipment, and clothing. They can be found in the Greymane Camp and settlements across Pywel. Shakatu's offering is positioned as a step above typical vendor stock, consistent with his characterization as a shrewd and well-connected trader. This mirrors his BDO role, where his inventory attracted aristocrats from across the kingdom.

The Goldleaf Merchants

The Goldleaf Merchants are a goblin trading guild operating within Hernand. Under Split Horn's leadership, the Goldleafs turned hostile and aggressive. Shakatu's quest to overthrow Split Horn restores the faction to peaceful commerce. The Goldleafs represent one of the 110 distinct factions spread across Pywel, tracked in the game's Knowledge System. Aligning with them through Shakatu's quest may unlock access to faction-specific vendors and resources, and increase the player's Contribution standing in the Hernand region.

Black Desert Online connection

In Black Desert Online, Shakatu is the founder of a settlement bearing his name in the northern canyons of the Valencia desert. Known as the "Big Hand" of Valencia, he built his fortune by trading rare and mysterious items. His settlement attracted aristocrats from across the kingdom who traveled great distances to access his unique inventory. As a goblin, Shakatu takes excellent care of his kinsmen, which helped goblins take important roles in his town.

He is described as a Level 99 NPC in BDO with a "laid-back and easygoing" personality who "doesn't seem to care a lot about money despite being so wealthy." This characterization carries into Crimson Desert, where Shakatu is more concerned with restoring order to the Goldleaf Merchants than with personal enrichment.

Pearl Abyss has officially stated that Crimson Desert has no story continuity with Black Desert Online; the two are separate IPs. Characters like Shakatu and Alustin the Alchemist appear as homages for BDO players, similar to how Final Fantasy handles recurring characters (Cid, Biggs, Wedge) across separate entries.
