Featured-quality rewrite with full 5-region breakdown, map scale details, biome diversity, lore, technology, traversal, and seamless world design
Pywel is the continent where Crimson Desert takes place. It is a seamless open world filled with vast wilderness, bustling cities, ancient ruins, and dangerous frontiers. Here you will find everything from snow-blasted mountains and green highlands to arid deserts and steampunk industrial zones — all connected without a single loading screen.
The playable area of Pywel is at least twice the size of Skyrim and larger than Red Dead Redemption 2's map. Pearl Abyss has confirmed that travelling from one end of the continent to the other takes over two hours on horseback, making it one of the largest seamless open worlds in gaming. Despite this ambition, the developers have emphasized that "size doesn't matter" on its own — what matters is the density of meaningful content filling that space.
The entire continent is fully seamless. There are no loading screens between regions, cities, interiors, or even the floating Abyss islands high above the surface. Players can walk, ride, climb, glide, or fly from any point to any other point without interruption.
Pywel is divided into five distinct regions, each functioning as its own country with unique environments, cultures, factions, and challenges. Producer Will Powers described them as reflecting "the variety of our reality, in which some countries feel much more futuristic than others." The main story takes players progressively through each region, though the open world allows exploration in any order.
Paleoon is the homeland of the Greymanes, once unified under the great leader Gian. With Gian's death, the region has been plunged into chaos as a bloody battle unfolds between the surviving Greymanes who fight to uphold his will and the Black Bear forces who seek to destroy his legacy. Your journey begins here, reuniting the scattered Greymanes to rebuild the faction and reclaim your homeland. The landscape is characterized by green highlands, rugged terrain, and open grasslands where wild horses roam.
Hernand is both a region and a major city, serving as the heart of much of the early-to-mid game. The city features medieval architecture with towering castles and fortifications. Its streets are populated by a diverse array of fantasy races including giants and antlered elf-like beings among the human crowds.
Key locations include Hernand Castle, where Kliff infiltrates using Hernandian Banquet Attire to access the Abyss. The Reed Devil terrorizes the citizens as the bogeyman called 'The Devil of the Reed Fields.' The surrounding countryside is rich with forests and rivers, making it one of the best areas for logging and fishing.
Demeniss is the political and military center of Pywel. The region has been thrown into turmoil following its king falling into a coma, creating a power vacuum that rival factions are racing to fill. Will Powers described Demeniss as the region where geopolitical tensions are at their highest. Players encounter large-scale battles, fortress sieges, and faction intrigue as they navigate the political landscape.
Delesyia stands apart from every other region in Pywel. As Will Powers put it: "They've really adopted technology. So they have mechs, they have flying robots. This is not your typical fantasy. This is almost leaning a little bit more towards steampunk when you're in this region." Dwarven engineers have created combat mechs armed with machine guns, rockets, and EMP pulses. Flying battle robots patrol the skies. The architecture and infrastructure look fundamentally different from the rest of the continent, reflecting an industrialized society that has embraced mechanical innovation. Delesyia appears fourth in the narrative sequence, making its technology mid-to-late-game content. See the Delesyia article for full details.
The Crimson Desert is the titular region — a vast, unforgiving expanse of crimson sands stretching across the southern portion of the continent. Red-orange sand and towering rock formations create a stark contrast to the frozen north and the green heartlands. This arid wasteland is outlaw territory, far from the law and order of the central regions. It is believed to hold the deepest secrets of the continent.
Suspended high above Pywel are the Abyss Islands — floating landmasses that can be accessed through portals unlocked with mysterious Abyss Artifacts. These ethereal platforms float among the clouds and represent some of the game's most challenging and mysterious content. Fragments of the Abyss are falling to the lands below, scattering dangerous power across Pywel. Dark forces seek to exploit these fragments, and restoring the Abyss's broken balance is a central part of the journey.
Pywel's five regions create dramatic environmental variety across the continent:
Green highlands and grasslands — Rolling fields in Paleoon and parts of Hernand where wild horses graze and farms dot the landscape
Dense forests — Thick woodlands in Hernand providing lumber and shelter for wildlife
Snow-blasted mountains — The frozen peaks of Kweiden, homeland of Kliff Macduff, featuring inhospitably cold conditions and hardy inhabitants
Arid desert — The Crimson Desert's red sands, towering rock formations, and unforgiving heat
Medieval cities — Hernand's castles and fortifications, Demeniss's military strongholds
Industrial zones — Delesyia's steampunk architecture, workshops, and mechanical infrastructure
Rivers and lakes — Waterways threading through multiple regions, supporting fishing and travel
Getting around Pywel involves multiple modes of travel that unlock as the game progresses:
On foot — Walking, running, climbing cliff faces, and swimming through waterways
Horseback — The primary travel method. Wild horses can be tamed or purchased from vendors. Horse sliding lets you power-slide around corners.
Crow Wings — A gliding ability that lets Kliff soar across distances from high points
Mechs — Missile-firing combat mechs become available later in the game, providing both traversal and combat power
Dragon — Rideable dragons allow flight high above the continent in late-game content
Fast travel — Traces of the Abyss discovered during exploration unlock fast travel points across the continent
The technology level of Pywel is primarily medieval, but new advancements are ushering in a new age. Pistols, cannons, and hand-mounted cannons have been invented, and players can use these firearms alongside traditional weapons. Alchemy has been discovered as an art allowing practitioners to imbue weapons with additional abilities. The technological variance between regions is intentional — some of Pywel's leaders embrace progress while others resist it, a tension explored through faction quests.
Many of Pywel's quests revolve around the factions, houses, and organizations scattered across the continent. Some quests are grand — reclaiming fortresses, defeating formidable foes, and shifting the balance of power. Others are quieter, requiring you to help residents with everyday tasks. Faction reputation determines how regions react to the player. At a war state with a faction, their guards will attack on sight. Building relationships through quests and story progression opens regions up.
The world of Pywel is rich with knowledge waiting to be uncovered — information about inhabitants, wildlife, skills, items, and more. This knowledge can be acquired by interacting with characters and objects, exploring new areas, reading books, and even observing from afar. Knowledge entries may provide clues to completing quests, open paths to new skills, or reveal hidden opportunities.
Beyond combat and questing, Pywel offers a full spectrum of life skills including farming, fishing, logging, mining, ranching, cooking, alchemy, and smithing. Players can fish in rivers, tend crops, carry pigs to pens, stir ingredients at camp cauldrons, and mine ore from rock faces. None of these are mandatory, but all provide tangible benefits. The Greymane Camp serves as a living hub that grows and evolves as you invest resources into its construction.
