Kiln Repair at the Kilnden Workshop is the 48th main quest in Crimson Desert and the most puzzle-heavy quest in Chapter 4. Kliff must activate an ancient generator and then repair three broken kilns scattered around the workshop area. The four objectives can be tackled in any order, though the generator needs to be activated first since it powers everything else.
Kiln Repair at the Kilnden Workshop is the 48th main quest in Crimson Desert, found in Chapter 4: The Price of Knowledge under the Mysterious Iron Pot sub-chapter. After arriving at the Kilnden Workshop west of Hernand Castle and meeting the dwarven craftsman Grimnir, Kliff must restore power to the facility by activating an ancient generator and then repairing three separate kilns. This quest is widely considered one of the most puzzle-heavy segments in the entire game, and several of its objectives require creative use of Axiom Force and Force Palm.
Completing this quest and its follow-up, The Mysterious Pot, rewards Kliff with the Kuku Iron Pot, a special storage vessel with 230 slots for Abyss-type objects, machine parts, and contraptions. The pot is essential for later crafting and ATAG construction.

The quest has four main objectives. The ancient generator must be activated first because it supplies power to the three kilns. After the generator is running, the three kiln objectives can be tackled in any order. Each kiln has its own objective marker on the in-game map.
Objective | Kiln Type | Map Position | Difficulty |
|---|---|---|---|
Generator tower | Central area | Moderate | |
Put Fuel Into the Kiln | Fuel kiln | Northernmost marker | Moderate |
Fix the Dismantled Kiln | Dismantled kiln | Middle marker | Hard |
Fix the Disconnected Kiln | Disconnected kiln | Southernmost marker | Easy |
The generator tower has four concentric rings, each bearing a glowing yellow symbol. Two controls sit at the base: a yellow switch that selects which ring is active, and a wooden lever that rotates the active ring. The top and bottom symbols are already in their correct positions. You only need to adjust the two middle rings. For a detailed breakdown of this puzzle, see How to Activate the Ancient Generator.
The ancient generator is a tall stone tower located in the central area of the Kilnden Workshop. It features four concentric rings, each engraved with a glowing symbol that resembles a potion bottle or beaker. Two control mechanisms sit at the base of the tower: a yellow switch (also called the pressure gauge) that selects which ring is currently active, and a wooden lever (the crank) that rotates the selected ring. The goal is to align all four symbols into a single vertical column. For a dedicated breakdown of this puzzle, see How to Activate the Ancient Generator.
The bottom ring and the top ring are already in their correct positions and do not need adjustment. Only the second and third rings need to be rotated. When a ring snaps into the correct alignment, you will hear a distinct clicking sound confirming the position.
Push the yellow lever all the way right to select the 2nd ring.
Push the wooden lever right to align the 2nd symbol.
Push the yellow lever to the middle to select the 3rd ring.
Push the wooden lever left to align the 3rd symbol.
All four symbols line up vertically and the generator activates. Three new kiln objectives appear on the map.
This kiln is at the northernmost objective marker. You need to collect five blue glowing energy balls and insert them into round openings around the kiln using Axiom Force. For a full guide on all three kiln puzzles, see How to Fix and Fuel the Kilns.
The fuel kiln is located at the northernmost objective marker. It has five round openings (receptacles) arranged around its exterior, and each one needs a blue glowing energy ball inserted into it. The energy balls are scattered around the workshop area, some hidden in the flooded marshland nearby. You must use Axiom Force (hold L3 on controller) to grab each ball and then push or carry it to the kiln. Once all five are inserted, push the wooden lever to activate the kiln.
Ball | Location |
|---|---|
Ball 1 | On the ground floor beside the kiln |
Ball 2 | On the ground floor beside the kiln (near Ball 1) |
Ball 3 | Inside a cave entrance in the flooded area toward the generator hill |
Ball 4 | In the eye of a bird statue with a glowing head in the flooded area left of the kiln. Pull it out with L2/LT. |
Ball 5 | On the ground in the water near the bird statue |
After inserting all five balls, push the wooden lever around the kiln to activate it.
Ball 3 (in the cave entrance) sometimes fails to spawn. If it does not appear, reboot the game or reload an earlier autosave. This is a known issue.
This kiln is at the middle objective marker. Its structure has collapsed into separate pieces that you need to reassemble.
Use Axiom Force to lift the first broken piece (to the right of the kiln, the most visibly destroyed section) and stack it on top of the base. The piece auto-rotates into position.
Grab the second broken piece (behind the kiln, the chimney section) and stack it on top of the first.
Climb on top of both stacked pieces, jump, and use Force Palm (R3) mid-air to connect them together.
Push the wooden lever to power on the kiln.
The dismantled kiln is at the middle objective marker. Its structure has collapsed into separate stone pieces that must be reassembled. This objective requires Axiom Force to lift heavy objects and Force Palm to fuse them together. It is widely regarded as the trickiest part of the entire quest because of its reliance on positioning and mid-air ability timing.
This kiln is at the southernmost objective marker and is the simplest of the three.
Walk behind the kiln and find the loose power cable near the wooden lever.
Interact with the cable connection point to plug it back in.
Push the wooden lever to activate the kiln.
The disconnected kiln is at the southernmost objective marker and is by far the simplest of the three kiln repairs. Its power cable has been severed, and you just need to reconnect it. A useful trick for finding the break point: raise your torch (or lantern) near the kiln, and the disconnected cable will be highlighted by a yellow line indicating it is unpowered.
After all three kilns are powered on, a short cutscene plays. Return to Grimnir at the ancient generator tower and speak with him to complete the quest. This immediately unlocks the follow-up quest, The Mysterious Pot, where Kliff collects the finished Kuku Iron Pot.
After speaking with Grimnir to complete the kiln repairs, you may need to pass time before the pot is ready. Hold the Options button (or Start on Xbox) and select the wait icon on the right side of the menu to advance time. Grimnir is only available during daytime hours, so if you arrive at night, use the same time-skip mechanic to advance to morning.
The generator must be activated before the three kiln objectives become available. Start there.
If you misalign the generator rings, reload your most recent autosave. The puzzle resets to its default state.
For the dismantled kiln, the mid-air Force Palm connection is the trickiest part. Make sure you have enough height before pressing R3.
The disconnected kiln takes about 30 seconds. Do not overthink it; just reconnect the cable and pull the lever.

Objective guides: How to Activate the Ancient Generator, How to Fix and Fuel the Kilns
Push the yellow switch all the way to the right. This selects the 2nd ring from the bottom.
Push the wooden lever to the right until the 2nd symbol aligns directly above the bottom symbol. Wait for the click.
Push the yellow switch to the middle position. This selects the 3rd ring.
Push the wooden lever to the left until the 3rd symbol aligns with the others. Wait for the click.
Once all four symbols form a straight vertical line, the generator hums to life and three new objective markers appear on your map, one for each kiln that needs repair.
The alignment must be precise. If you overshoot a ring, reverse direction on the wooden lever until you hear the click.
If the generator refuses to activate even though the symbols look aligned, reload your most recent autosave. The puzzle resets to its default state on reload.
The yellow switch has three positions: left (top ring, already set), middle (3rd ring), and right (2nd ring). The bottom ring has no control because it is already locked in place.
Ball | Location | Notes |
|---|---|---|
Ball 1 | On the ground floor directly beside the kiln | Impossible to miss. Glowing blue on the floor next to the receptacles. |
Ball 2 | On the ground floor beside the kiln, near Ball 1 | Also right next to the kiln. Grab it the same way as Ball 1. |
Ball 3 | Inside a cave entrance in the flooded area, toward the hill where the ancient generator stands | Walk through the flooded marshland heading toward the generator. The cave mouth is partially hidden by reeds. Known to have a spawn bug (see below). |
Ball 4 | The eye of a bird-shaped stone statue in the flooded area to the left of the kiln | The statue has a glowing blue head. Stand to the side, aim with L3, and pull the eye out with L2/LT. |
Ball 5 | On the ground in the water near the bird statue | Close to Ball 4. Partially submerged in the shallow water. |
Avoid jumping or throwing the fuel balls while carrying them. Walking with them is the most reliable method and reduces the chance of physics glitches causing balls to clip through the floor or walls.
Align yourself directly with each round opening before inserting a ball. If the ball will not slot in, adjust your angle slightly and lower your aim.
The bird statue eye (Ball 4) requires you to stand at the statue's side, not directly in front. Aim at the glowing eye with Axiom Force and then use the pull input (L2/LT) to extract it.
After inserting all five balls, the wooden lever is located on the kiln's side. Push it to complete this objective.
Multiple players have reported that Ball 3 (inside the cave) occasionally fails to spawn. If you enter the cave and the blue glow is not visible anywhere inside, this is a known bug. The recommended fix is to fully close and restart the game, or reload a previous autosave taken before you began the fuel kiln objective. The ball should appear on reload.
Locate the first broken piece to the right of the kiln. It is the section with rough, jagged edges that looks the most visibly destroyed. Use Axiom Force (hold L3) to lift it into the air.
Carry the piece over the kiln's base and lower it on top. The game assists by automatically rotating the piece into the correct alignment as you bring it close. It will snap into position.
Locate the second broken piece behind the kiln. This is the chimney section, identifiable by its even rougher, more destroyed edges. Lift it with Axiom Force.
Stack the chimney piece on top of the first piece you already placed. Again, the game will help rotate it into alignment.
Climb on top of both stacked pieces. At the top, jump into the air (Square on PlayStation, X on Xbox) and then press R3 (right stick) during the jump to perform a downward Force Palm. The slam connects both pieces to the base, completing the assembly.
Push the wooden lever on the kiln's side to power it on.
If you have already unlocked the double-jump skill, use it here. The extra height makes the mid-air Force Palm significantly easier to execute because you have more time to press R3 at the peak of your jump.
Make sure you are standing on top of the stacked pieces, not on the ground beside them, before jumping. The Force Palm must come from directly above to connect the components.
If the Force Palm animation plays but the pieces do not fuse, you may not have been high enough. Try again from the highest point on the stack.
The pieces have a generous auto-alignment radius. You do not need pixel-perfect placement when lowering them; just get them roughly above the kiln and the game handles the rotation.
This objective introduces the Aerial Force Palm, a variation of the standard Force Palm performed while airborne. If you have not already unlocked it, the game teaches it here as part of the puzzle. When positioning the broken pieces above the kiln, watch for leaves swirling around the top of the structure. The swirling leaves confirm that the piece is properly aligned and ready to be locked in.
You can place both broken pieces on the kiln before performing the Aerial Force Palm. If you stack the base piece and then the chimney piece on top of it, a single downward slam from above will fuse everything together at once. This saves time compared to locking each piece individually.
Walk behind the kiln and follow the power cable along the floor until you reach the far side.
Find the loose cable where it connects to the kiln. The connection point is near the wooden lever at the rear of the structure.
Interact with the cable (hold X on PlayStation, A on Xbox) to push it back into the connection pipe. Kliff reconnects it automatically.
Walk to the front of the kiln and push the wooden lever to activate it.
This entire objective takes about 30 seconds. Do not overthink it; the interaction prompt appears when you are standing at the correct spot.
Before leaving the Kilnden Workshop area, look for an Abyss Nexus nearby. It is a round floor plate that glows faintly. Stand on top of it for a few seconds until it lights up fully, and it will register as a fast travel point on your map. Activating this nexus is optional but highly recommended, since you will need to return to Grimnir later whenever you want to upgrade a Kuku Iron Pot or craft related items.
While the kiln repair quest itself lists no direct reward, it is the critical prerequisite for The Mysterious Pot (quest 49), which rewards the Kuku Iron Pot. After completing the kiln repairs and speaking with Grimnir, you find a lever directly beside him. Push the lever clockwise to open a floor mechanism, and the Kuku Iron Pot drops out onto a circular stone platform below. Pick it up to add it to your inventory.
Grimnir then directs Kliff to deliver the pot to Togrum, another workshop NPC who provides a tutorial on how to use it.
Togrum stands near a large stone ball (an Abyss Orb). To learn the pot's basic function, hold L3 to activate Axiom Force on the stone ball, then hold Triangle (Y on Xbox) to seal the object into the pot. This stores the item in one of the pot's 230 slots. To retrieve a stored item later, open the Kuku Iron Pot from your inventory and select the item you want to release.
Property | Details |
|---|---|
Storage Slots | 230 |
Can Store | Abyss-type objects, machine parts, contraptions, power cores |
Cannot Store | |
Key Use | Store large objects with Axiom Force, then seal them into the pot using the 'Seal' action (press Y/Triangle) |
Retrieval | Examine the pot and select 'Discard' to release stored items |
Later Importance | Required for Small Kuku ATAG construction and Abyssal Fusion armor crafting |
Grimnir can enhance the Kuku Iron Pot and craft related items once you bring him the right recipes. These recipes are unlocked through main quest progression and faction questlines:
Source | Availability | Unlocks |
|---|---|---|
Chapter 4 onward | Basic Kuku Iron Pot enhancements | |
Chapter 5 onward | Intermediate pot recipes and Abyss-related crafting | |
Chapter 10 onward | Advanced recipes including Small Kuku ATAG components |
Later in the game, the Kuku Iron Pot feeds into two major crafting branches. The Small Kuku ATAG is a compact mech suit that Kliff can pilot, and the Abyssal Fusion armor set is crafted through a separate recipe chain. Both require Abyss Cores and other rare materials, so hold on to any Abyss-type objects you find rather than discarding them.
Additional Kuku-based items include the Kuku Pack and the Kuku Rocket Pack, both of which are unlocked through Oongka's questline. The Kuku Rocket Pack functions as a jetpack, giving Kliff temporary flight capabilities for exploration and traversal.
This quest serves as a tutorial for two of Kliff's core traversal and puzzle-solving abilities. If you have not used these abilities before, this is where the game expects you to practice them.
Ability | Input | Use in This Quest |
|---|---|---|
Hold L3 (left stick click) | Lift and carry heavy objects: kiln pieces, fuel balls, and the bird statue's eye. Also used to aim at distant objects before pulling them. | |
R3 (right stick click) mid-air | Slam downward from above to fuse the dismantled kiln pieces together. Must be performed while airborne. | |
Pull / Attract | L2/LT while aiming with Axiom Force | Extract the fuel ball from the bird statue's eye socket. Aim with L3 first, then hold L2 to pull. |
Problem | Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
Fuel ball will not insert into receptacle | Misaligned angle or aim is too high | Stand directly in front of the opening, lower your aim, and walk forward slowly |
Fuel ball clips through floor or wall | Throwing or jumping while carrying | Always walk calmly with balls. Never jump or throw them. |
Ball 3 missing from cave | Known spawn bug | Close the game fully and restart, or reload a previous autosave |
Force Palm does not fuse kiln pieces | Not enough height when pressing R3 | Climb to the top of the stacked pieces, use double-jump if unlocked, and press R3 at the peak of your jump |
Generator symbols look aligned but tower won't activate | Rings not fully snapped into position | Nudge the lever slightly in each direction until you hear the click. If stuck, reload autosave. |
Cannot find disconnected cable | Looking at the wrong side of the kiln | Raise your torch/lantern to highlight the unpowered yellow cable line. Follow it to the rear of the kiln. |
Start with the generator. The three kiln objectives do not appear until the generator is running, so tackle that first.
Do the disconnected kiln first. It takes 30 seconds and gives you an easy win to build confidence before the harder objectives.
Save before the dismantled kiln. The mid-air Force Palm can be finicky, and having a recent save prevents frustration.
Scout the flooded area before collecting fuel balls. Walk through the marsh and locate all five balls before you start carrying them. This avoids unnecessary backtracking.
Unlock double-jump beforehand. If you have skill points available, investing in the double-jump ability before this quest makes the dismantled kiln significantly easier.
Hold the menu button to pass time. If Grimnir is unavailable because it is nighttime, hold the Options/Start button and select the wait icon to advance to daytime. Grimnir is only available during the day.
