Greymane is a Story NPC in Crimson Desert. Warriors who safeguard Pailune. People of diverse backgrounds and abilities have gathered as if by fate, taking on dangerous tasks others dare not accept. Though their foremost mission is to protect Pailune's peace, they extend a helping hand to anyone in need, and their renown now spreads across all of Pywel.

The Greymane warband is led by Kliff, widely regarded as the finest swordsman in Pailune. Kliff inherited command after the death of Gian, the legendary commander who originally unified the warband and used it to keep peace across the Pailune region. Gian's assassination by the Black Bears and the ambush that followed left Kliff as the senior surviving member.
Kliff is the son of Martinus. He leads the Greymanes with what the developers describe as a strong moral compass, choosing to protect the weak rather than pursue personal power. His first responsibility as acting leader is to track down the scattered survivors of the Black Bear ambush and rebuild the warband at its new base in Hernand.
The Greymane roster mixes core story companions with a wider crew of recruited comrades who settle at the camp as the game progresses. The named members most closely tied to the protagonist are shown below. See the dedicated articles for full bios, stats, and combat details.
Member | Role | Notes |
|---|---|---|
Leader, playable | Son of Martinus. Versatile sword, shield, bow, and spear fighter. Acting commander after Gian's death. | |
Frontline powerhouse, playable | Orc warrior and Kliff's most trusted comrade in arms. Fights with greataxe and hammer. | |
Speed fighter, playable | Joins the warband during the Chapter 3 quest Bustling Hill arc at Howling Hill. Not an original member of Gian's company but a willing ally. | |
Strategist | Resourceful tactician. Seen fighting Black Bears in the opening ambush before being thrown from a cliff. | |
Archer | Known as the Empress of the Bow. A core Greymane combatant and ambush survivor. | |
Old ally | An earlier Greymane associate found nursing a leg wound. His rescue motivates Kliff to hunt down the remaining survivors. | |
Roster manager | Based at Greymane Camp. Provides an overview of recruited comrades and assigns them to dispatch tasks. |
Beyond this named core, over twenty additional Greymanes can be recruited to the camp through faction quests such as the Embers of Return and Gathered Will mission lines, along with side recruits posted on the camp commission board.
After the Black Bears sack Pailune, the warband resettles inside the Duchy of Hernand and founds the Greymane Camp as their operating base. The camp begins as a small tent settlement above Howling Hill and is rebuilt into a fortified stronghold over the course of the story through the camp construction system.
Camp upgrades are funded with lumber, stone, and resources obtained by liberating occupied landmarks across Pywel and by completing faction missions. Each upgrade tier adds or unlocks services, enlarges the roster of available comrades, and improves passive rewards from dispatch missions. The camp becomes the hub for story cutscenes, companion meals that unlock backstory missions, and the central Trust-system interactions for Kliff and the other comrades.
The Greymanes drive the main story across the Prologue, twelve numbered chapters, and the Epilogue. In the Prologue, Kliff fights Myurdin of the Black Bears in the Hills of No Return during the quest In Ashes. The duel is an intentionally unwinnable fight: Kliff is thrown into the Nas River, survives, and washes up near Hernand determined to rebuild the warband.
Chapters 1 and 2 cover Kliff's arrival in Hernand, where he earns the locals' trust through small favors and establishes a foothold. Chapter 3 is the warband's rebuilding arc: after the Howling Hill camp expansion is completed in the Bustling Hill quest, the chapter closes with the narrative cutscene quest Greymanes Reunited. All gathered comrades share a feast at the newly expanded tent, formally marking the warband's return as a unified company.
From Chapter 4 onward the Greymanes fan out across the continent as Kliff forms alliances with regional factions, liberates blockaded settlements, and pursues the conspiracy that connects the Black Bears to deeper supernatural threats first studied by Gian. The Epilogue resolves the warband's arc: the standard ending has the comrades part ways once the conflict is settled, while the true ending, conditional on high companion Trust and specific story choices, keeps them together at a permanent settlement.
Greymane Camp offers a number of services that expand as the story progresses. Most are unlocked by story beats or by recruiting specific comrades through faction quests.
Feature | Details |

A personal chest located in Kliff's room at the camp. Base capacity starts around 230 slots and can be expanded up to 1,000 slots through successive Greymane Camp expansions, giving players a secure place to offload materials and collectibles. | |
The Freesword Dispatch system sends recruited comrades on passive missions that yield resources, gold, and unique items. The system is fully unlocked after the Rumors From the Sawmill quest and a Shakatu letter read at the shrine. Eleven mission types cover gathering, blockade breaking, reconnaissance, and construction tasks. | |
Comrade Deployments | Speak to Ross at the camp to review every recruited Greymane. Each comrade has individual Health, Attack, Defense, Attack Speed, Movement Speed, and Critical Hit stats. Matching specialists to mission types improves success rates and rewards. |
Commission Board | Individual Greymanes post personal side requests. See Greymane Commissions for the current list of posters and rewards. Completing these requests raises Trust with the assigning comrade. |
Food Shop and Meals | The camp cook provides buff meals and is the trigger for companion backstory missions. Sharing food with a comrade at a high Trust level unlocks a playable flashback mission that explores that character's history with the warband. |
Workshops and Services | Upgrading the camp adds a trading center, farms and ranches, weapon and armor workshops, a barber shop, a dyehouse, and eventually a quartermaster. A dedicated teleport point can also be unlocked through the How to Unlock the Greymane Camp House Teleport guide. |
Building trust with the camp's residents through the Companion Trust system unlocks personal quests, improves dispatch performance, and is a prerequisite for the true Epilogue ending.
