Enhanced with detailed attack patterns, combat strategy, Shadow Claw reward, Silver Fang mount connection, prerequisite quests, and second encounter details
Black Fang is the legendary wolf in Crimson Desert. It is a massive, exceptionally powerful wolf that roams the Forest of Wolves within the Hernand region. Black Fang serves as an optional boss encounter that gates access to one of the game's most important exploration features: revealing the locations of all other legendary animals on the world map. Defeating this creature drops Leebur's Soul, a unique Key Item that, when used, permanently marks every legendary animal's position on your map. Black Fang also drops Shadow Claw, an Abyss Gear weapon that unleashes three forward swipes with bonus damage.
Black Fang is not classified among the numbered story bosses of the main questline. Instead, it functions as a legendary animal encounter tied to the Hernand faction quest system. Defeating Black Fang is also a prerequisite for unlocking the Silver Fang legendary wolf mount, one of the most sought-after permanent mounts in the game.
Black Fang can be encountered at any point in the game without accepting a quest. However, the recommended path involves the House Celeste faction quests in Hernand. The mission associated with Black Fang is called "Silence from Afar" (also referred to as "Howls from North Gate" in some quest logs), which appears in the House Celeste tab of the Hernand Faction Quests. To unlock this quest, you need to complete a sufficient number of Hernand Faction Quests (standard faction quests, not bounty hunts).
Once the quest is active, you can use your Lantern (L1 on PlayStation) to reveal a glowing gold trail on the ground that leads directly to Black Fang's territory. If the trail fades, hold the lantern out longer and look downward to strengthen the tracking line. This guided path makes locating the legendary wolf significantly easier than searching the forest on your own.
Black Fang inhabits the Forest of Wolves in the Hernand region, north of The Sage's Peak. The wolf roams within this forested area alongside a regular wolf pack. To find Black Fang, travel north from Hernand toward The Sage's Peak and continue into the dense forest beyond. The creature is large enough to be spotted from a moderate distance, but it may be moving through the trees with its pack.
The first fight against Black Fang takes place in the Forest of Wolves, north of The Sage's Peak. Black Fang is accompanied by a pack of regular wolves that will join the fight. This encounter has two distinct components: dealing with the pack and then focusing on the legendary wolf itself.
Black Fang is significantly more powerful than standard wolves. It has a large health pool, deals heavy damage, and moves with unnatural speed. The wolf uses a combination of the following attacks:
Lunging Bite: Black Fang charges forward with a powerful bite. This attack has significant forward range but limited lateral reach, making sideways dodges the best counter.
Sweeping Claw Swipes: Hard-hitting slash combos that cover a wide area in front of the wolf. These deal serious melee damage and can stagger you if they connect.
Teleportation: Black Fang can teleport across the arena, closing gaps instantly. The teleporting can be extreme, repositioning the wolf behind or beside you with little warning.
Dark Shroud (Invulnerable Phase): Black Fang's signature move. The wolf becomes invulnerable and shrouds the entire arena in darkness. During this phase, Black Fang attempts to claw and juggle you repeatedly. Focus entirely on dodging during this phase; do not try to attack.
Ensure your weapons and armor are upgraded before attempting this fight. Early-game equipment may not be sufficient. Stock up on Grilled Meat or better cooking recipes before the fight, as you will take damage. Bring plenty of recovery items to sustain yourself through both the pack fight and the main encounter.
Standard wolves in Black Fang's pack are weaker and can be eliminated quickly. Prioritize thinning the pack first to reduce the number of enemies attacking you simultaneously. Use ranged attacks if available to pull individual wolves away from the group before engaging them in melee.
Once the pack is dealt with, focus entirely on Black Fang. The key to this fight is patience and mobility. Roll constantly and do not try to block or tank hits. Dodge sideways to avoid the lunging attacks, which have significant forward range but limited lateral reach. After dodging, wait for Black Fang to stand still briefly, then punish with your strongest attacks.
The most effective damage window comes after Black Fang finishes an attack chain and pauses. Use the Blinding Flash Finisher (L1 + R1 + R2) during these openings for optimal damage. During the Dark Shroud invulnerable phase, focus purely on survival. Keep rolling and evading until the darkness lifts and Black Fang becomes vulnerable again.
Defeating Black Fang drops two important rewards:
Leebur's Soul: A Key Item. Using Leebur's Soul from your inventory permanently reveals the map locations of all legendary animals across Pywel. This is one of the most valuable rewards in the game for exploration-focused players, as it removes the need to search blindly for rare legendary creature encounters.
Shadow Claw: An Abyss Gear weapon that unleashes three forward swipes, dealing additional bonus damage. Shadow Claw is a solid melee pickup for players looking to enhance their close-range combat abilities.
After defeating Black Fang the first time, the legendary wolf will eventually reappear in the Forest of Wolves. You must defeat Black Fang a second time for the encounter to fully resolve. The second fight takes place in the eastern area of The Sage's Peak, still within the Forest of Wolves but at a different location from the first encounter.
The second fight is notably more difficult than the first. Black Fang hits harder and uses its teleportation and Dark Shroud attacks more aggressively. However, there are no additional wolves to deal with during this encounter, so you can focus entirely on the legendary wolf. Make sure your defense level is solid before attempting the rematch. Patience wins this fight, not aggression. Take your time, dodge carefully, and punish only during safe windows.
Defeating Black Fang is a prerequisite for unlocking the Silver Fang legendary wolf mount, one of the most coveted permanent mounts in Crimson Desert. After Black Fang is defeated and Leebur's Soul is used, the Silver Fang's location becomes visible on the map.
Silver Fang is a legendary white wolf found in Howling Hollow, a cave located north of The Sage's Peak in the Hernand region. Silver Fang only spawns after Black Fang has been defeated as part of the House Celeste faction questline. To claim Silver Fang as a permanent mount, you must defeat it in combat, skin the creature, and collect the Fang of Silver Fang key item from the carcass. Take this key item to any Witch NPC to officially register the mount. Silver Fang functions as a rideable permanent mount and will also fight alongside you in combat.
The Hunting Challenges system includes tasks that benefit from knowing legendary animal locations, making Black Fang's reward essential for challenge completion.
The "The End of Myth" Hunting Challenge requires hunting a Silver Fang, white bear, white-scaled crocodile, and white bison, all of which become visible on the map after using Leebur's Soul.
Black Fang is referenced in the House Celeste faction questline as a threat to the northern regions of Hernand.
