Zone Levels
September 27, 2026 at 06:02 AM
Initial version (2026-09-27)
Zone levels are Control Resonant's main progression track. Dylan Faden does not earn character levels; instead each of the seven zones of Manhattan has its own level, which rises as Dylan works through that zone. The Steam achievements make the model explicit: Field Work asks the player to "Reach level 3 in any Zone.", Field Control to "Reach level 5 in every Zone.", and Zone Warden to "Unlock 40 Zone Upgrades."
Guides to the released game list seven zones. The story moves from Downtown to Central, after which the Evacuation Zone, the West Incursion Zone and The Park can be tackled in any order; the Underpass and The Unknown open later through the story. Six of the zones hold a Resonant boss, and the Evacuation Zone is the one without.
Zone | Character | Resonant |
|---|---|---|
Downtown | The starting zone and home of the Oldest House. | |
Central | Links the other zones and holds the FBC Field Office; mixes Hiss and Mold. | |
Evacuation Zone | Heavy Hiss presence and the Sinkhole. | None |
West Incursion Zone | Extreme gravity, bent by Gravity Anomalies. | |
The Park | Optional; overrun by The Mold. | |
Underpass | Beneath the city, connected to the Oldest House; opened through the story. | A later Resonant, not covered here to avoid spoilers |
The Unknown | The final zone. | A later Resonant, not covered here to avoid spoilers |
Anything done inside a zone feeds its level. Guides to the released game list main quests and side quests, World Feats, FBC Tasks, revealing the zone's map, opening crates, unlocking Fast Travel Doors, finding collectibles and defeating enemies as sources of Zone XP. World Feats are singled out as one of the best sources, since they also pay out Source and crafting materials. Some main quests level a zone far enough on their own to earn the first zone-level achievement along the way, according to guides. The activities themselves are listed on Side Activities.
Reward | Detail |
|---|---|
Zone Upgrade | One per level, according to guides; Zone Warden counts 40 of them across all zones. |
Talent Point | Each zone level grants a Talent Point to spend on the Talents tree. |
Better drops | More Source, resource and health drops inside that zone. |
Vendor stock | Each zone's vendor sells more as the zone's vendor level rises, including artifacts and a limited number of Reset Items; see Artifacts. |
SHÜM! machines | The arcade machines in each zone unlock once the zone reaches the required level, according to guides. |
Guides put the cap at 15 levels per zone, which across the seven zones makes 105 Zone Upgrades; the achievement needs 40 of them.
Defeating a Resonant refreshes Manhattan's zones. Enemies and activities such as World Feats come back with a fresh batch, and they return tougher, which gives the player more Zone XP to earn from the same broad tasks. Several guides describe this cycle, and it is the main way to keep raising a zone's level once its one-off content is done. Remedy has not given the mechanic a name in its own text.
Alongside zone levels, the game sums up a build as Build Power. Since the launch hotfix 1.3.3 of September 24, 2026, its English description reads "From unlocked Combat Abilities, Aberrant forms/upgrades, Talents, and Core Upgrades." Core Upgrades appear to be the Health and Power Upgrades: the achievement Core Competency asks the player to "Obtain a Health Upgrade or Power Upgrade.", and Personal Development and Astral ask for four of each. Each upgrade is assembled from three pieces found in special containers, according to guides, and Secret Hideouts and Testing Facilities hold some of those containers.
The same hotfix reduced the base health and required Falter level of most enemies, and raised the maximum Aberrant Strength and Ability Strength on a curve with progressively larger increases toward the end of the game. See Aberrant and Abilities for how those stats are raised.
The achievements named on this page are listed in full on Trophies and Achievements. Combat that feeds a zone's XP is covered on Melee Combat, and the build hub where Talent Points and upgrades are spent is The Gap.
