Control Resonant's zones are filled with optional activities alongside the main story, and Remedy's post-launch note lists side quests, World Feats and New Game Plus as the things to keep playing after the story ends. Almost every activity feeds a zone's level (see Zone Levels), and most have their own Steam achievement. This page is a hub: it lists each activity type, what it involves and what it rewards, without story details. Counts and locations come from guides to the released game.
World Feats
World Feats are dynamic events that spring up as Dylan roams a zone, marked on the map with white icons. They are one of the best sources of Zone XP and also pay out Source and crafting materials. The Steam achievement Up to the Task asks for a single one ("Complete a World Feat."), and guides note that a few are required along the main story. After each Resonant is defeated, the zones refresh with a new batch of World Feats, so they can be repeated for more Zone XP.
Guides describe several types. The most widely covered is the Pattern Break, a puzzle in which objects float into the air and Dylan has to strike the one moving erratically, repeatedly, until the pattern breaks. Other types include Hiss Hives, Hold the Line, Suspended Extermination and Apex Hunts, and many involve defeating a tougher named enemy or defending an FBC asset for a set time.
Activity Types
Activity | What It Involves | How Many | Achievement or Reward |
|---|---|---|---|
FBC Tasks | Short jobs picked up from a taskboard in each zone's FBC safe zone, such as scouting a location, clearing enemies or escorting agents to safety. An agent outside the FBC Field Office in Central introduces them. | Seven boards with six tasks each, 42 in all, according to guides | FBC Recruit ("Complete an FBC Task.") and Diligent Consultant ("Complete 20 FBC Tasks.") |
Thresholds | Two side quests: Unsupervised Science, in which Dylan finds underground Testing Facilities and completes the experiments inside, and The Last Taxi, in which he enters taxis that carry him to another area and has to find the way back. | 13 in all: six Testing Facilities and seven taxis, according to guides | Threshold Researcher ("Deal with all the Thresholds in Manhattan."); each Testing Facility holds a Power Upgrade container, according to guides |
Secret Hideouts | Self-contained puzzles that appear on the map as a question mark once Dylan is close; solving one opens an underground room. | Six, according to guides | Backroom Espionage ("Visit all the Secret Hideouts."); each room holds a Health Upgrade container, according to guides |
SHÜM! | Arcade machines with timed challenges, marked on the map as challenges and unlocked once the zone reaches the required level. | At least one per zone, according to guides | SHÜM! ("Play a level in SHÜM!"); guides add that they award outfits |
Dylan's Sketchbook | Drawing spots marked with a question mark when Dylan is close. | 11, according to guides | Work-Life Balance ("Complete all instances of the Sketchbook.") |
Every Dog Has Her Day | Find a dog in each zone and return the blue plush dragon toy lying near it; the last dog waits in The Gap. | Eight dogs, according to guides | Dog's Best Friend ("Gain a furry friend."); the quest's rewards include the Trusted Spanner artifact |
Freeze Frame | Contain rogue cameras by getting behind each one without being seen; each drops an instant photo that points to the next. | 14 cameras, two per zone, according to guides | Counts toward the Altered Items quests below |
Altered Items quests | Side quests in which Dylan contains rogue Altered Items for the Panopticon: guides list Freeze Frame, The Party Won't Stop, Panopticon Service Request, The Complete Set, A New Directive and Into the Valley of Death. | Six quests, according to guides | Panopticon Intern ("Contain Altered Items and help Langston.") |
Major Mold Incidents | Side quests dealing with Mold outbreaks across the city; details are left off this page because some open only after the main story. | Not listed here | Budding Mycologist ("Deal with the major Mold Incidents in Manhattan.") |
The Party Won't Stop, a side quest that starts in the West Incursion Zone, includes a karaoke sequence with lyric choices, according to guides. Completing side quests also unlocks new Artifacts and makes them available at vendors.
Getting Around
A zone's map starts hidden. Revealing it means finding three sensors blinking red around a mapping station and returning to the station to scan the area. Fast Travel Doors open quick routes between locations once unlocked, and some doors and lifts need a Power Core, carried on the Aberrant, to charge them. Each of these steps earns Zone XP, according to guides.
