Distortion is a special damage effect in Windrose that creates a brief area-of-effect burst around a struck enemy. The clearest live-build source is the Swamp Creature's Tooth club: its critical hits no longer deal bonus critical damage and instead trigger a Distortion burst that hits every nearby enemy. The effect reads as a visual shimmer followed by a short damage pulse. Because it is tied to a single weapon, treat Distortion as a weapon-specific mechanic in the current Early Access build rather than a status any loadout can apply.

How it is Applied
Distortion comes from the Swamp Creature's Tooth weapon effect: when a hit lands a critical, the weapon spends that crit on a Distortion burst around the target instead of bonus single-target damage. Critical chance therefore drives how often Distortion goes off, and the burst damages nearby enemies within a short radius, so grouped opponents take far more combined damage than single-target trades would suggest.
Damage Scaling
Distortion is a high-risk, high-reward mechanic. The burst hits harder the lower the wielder's remaining health, so the weapon peaks when the player is closest to dying. Stacking Vitality for survivability and deliberately fighting at low health are in tension, which is the central trade-off when building around the Swamp Creature's Tooth. The exact damage curve is not published, so treat the scaling as directional rather than a fixed multiplier.
Practical Use
Distortion shines on crowded pulls. Plague camps in the Cursed Swamps cluster enemies tightly, and a Distortion proc from Swamp Creature's Tooth can clear a second-row target the player would otherwise need to peel separately. It is also strong in boarding fights and pirate camps, where enemies bunch up on deck or around a fire.
The burst does not cleave through LOS breakers cleanly. Enemies behind terrain or LOS walls may be excluded from the AoE even if they are inside the displayed radius.
Pairing Distortion with Dominating Presence compounds its swarm-clear value. Dominating Presence grants post-kill melee bonuses, and Distortion's ability to convert single-target hits into multi-kill bursts feeds the kill chain.
Counterplay
Distortion damage is not a sustained DoT. Once the burst resolves, there is no lingering debuff; the damage is upfront. The counterplay is spacing: spreading out enemies prevents the AoE from hitting additional targets. In co-op, positioning teammates outside the burst radius is a non-issue because Distortion targets hostile entities only.
