The Spirit Companion System is one of the central features of Swords of Legends. It lets Sipan bring a soul from the spirit realm into battle to fight at the hero's side. A companion is not just decoration: it can step in to intercept incoming damage and join Sipan in linked finishers against an enemy.
The system grows out of the game's soul-capture mechanic. Sipan can capture souls during the adventure and then summon them in combat, binding enemies with spiritual seals and unleashing multi-target attacks as the hero and companion work together.
The first spirit companion shown is the Ox, described as a spectral, horned fellow traveler of the netherworld. The Ox is drawn from Ox-Head and Horse-Face, a pair of underworld guardians from classical Chinese mythology, which keeps the companion grounded in real folklore rather than invented design.
The Spirit Companion System works hand in hand with the wider toolkit described under Combat, and it reflects Sipan's underworld duties laid out in The Underworld and the Judge of King Yama.
