The Spirit Companion System is one of the central features of Swords of Legends. It lets Sipan bring a soul from the spirit realm into battle to fight at the hero's side. A companion is not just decoration: it can step in to intercept incoming damage and join Sipan in linked finishers against an enemy.
The system grows out of the game's soul-capture mechanic. Sipan can capture souls during the adventure and then summon them in combat, binding enemies with spiritual seals and unleashing multi-target attacks as the hero and companion work together.
The first spirit companion shown is the Ox, described as a spectral, horned fellow traveler of the netherworld. The Ox is drawn from Ox-Head and Horse-Face, a pair of underworld guardians from classical Chinese mythology, which keeps the companion grounded in real folklore rather than invented design.
A companion is more than a combat tool. Each captured spirit walks beside Sipan carrying a story, a power, and a voice of its own, and the longer the two travel together the more of that spirit's past comes to light. These tales act as mirrors, turning each journey into a question about the kind of life worth living.
The Ox Companion
The first companion shown is the Ox, the Ox-Head half of Ox-Head and Horse-Face, a pair of underworld guardians from classical Chinese mythology. The developers describe him as a well-rounded fighter who already seems to know the hero’s rhythm: he links up for cooperative finishers, and the moment enemies close in he throws himself in front to block and take the hits. He is described as not the only one, since the hero meets all sorts of souls while traveling, leaving room for more companions to join over the course of the adventure.
Companion Roles
Role | Detail |
|---|---|
Damage Interception | A companion can step in front of the hero to block incoming attacks and absorb hits. |
Linked Finishers | The companion joins the hero for cooperative finishing moves against an enemy. |
Distinct Identity | Each summonable ally has a completely distinct combat identity. The Ox, for example, blocks attacks and lands big, heavy hits. |
Own Story | Each captured spirit carries a story, a power, and a voice of its own, revealed the longer it travels with the hero. |
The Spirit Companion System works hand in hand with the wider toolkit described under Combat, and it reflects Sipan's underworld duties laid out in The Underworld and the Judge of King Yama.
