Swords of Legends is the newest installment in the Gujian series, a line of single-player Chinese fantasy role-playing games made by Aurogon Shanghai. The series began in 2010 and has run for over a decade, building a reputation in Chinese-speaking regions for story-driven adventures steeped in myth.
Every entry in the series tells its own complete, standalone story, so no prior experience is needed to start with Swords of Legends. The studio's earlier Gujian games are background and context only. Their characters, mechanics, and plots are separate, and details from those titles should not be assumed to carry over into this one.
What sets this entry apart is its reach. It is positioned as the first global launch in the franchise, bringing the series to PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S worldwide instead of releasing primarily within China, Taiwan, and Hong Kong as earlier entries did.
By the studio's own account the franchise has a 15-year history in China and has sold more than six million copies to date, which makes it one of the cornerstones of the Chinese single-player RPG scene. That track record is the foundation the developers are building this first worldwide release on, carrying the series' storytelling and art into a self-contained new adventure.
Mainline Gujian Games
Title | Year |
|---|---|
GuJian | 2010 |
GuJian 2 | 2013 |
GuJian 3 | 2018 |
Beyond the three mainline games, the series has expanded into companion books and a feature film. Swords of Legends continues that lineage as its newest chapter, while still telling a complete story of its own. In Chinese-speaking regions the series is known as 古剑奇谭 (Gujian Qitan), and this newest entry is titled 古剑 (Gujian).
