The Alien Ruins (known on this wiki under the older asset-file name Overgrown Ruins and accessible at that URL for backwards compatibility) are the lore-dense biome of underwater structures left behind by the Axum in Subnautica 2. The biome anchors the largest concentration of Axum architecture in the launch build and is the in-world site at which the player unlocks the Axum Vision Adaptation and begins to read the Axum glyph network.
Layout
The biome is structured around standing and partially collapsed Axum buildings, with the structures themselves still load-bearing for the biome's ecology. "Overgrown" is the right one-word description: the architecture is colonised by native marine flora and fauna, and the biome reads as biologically active rather than as a sterile archaeological site. Open courtyards, raised access platforms, and submerged interior chambers are the three repeating spatial elements; each carries a different mix of resources and creature spawns.
Axum Vision And Glyphs
Axum-built panels are present throughout the biome as scannable inscription surfaces. Without the Axum Vision Adaptation, the glyphs read as decorative carving. With Axum Vision active, the same panels resolve into readable PDA entries that flesh out the Axum lore arc. The biome is the most efficient place in the live build to advance that arc, because the density of inscription surfaces here is significantly higher than at outlying Axum sites in other biomes.

Lore Tracks Surfaced Here
Track | Surface | Player Activity |
|---|---|---|
Axum Settlement | Standing buildings and courtyards. | Scan-based PDA entries. |
Axum Power | Conduit panels feeding outward toward the Karakorum Power Plant. | Scan plus activation interaction. |
Axum Disappearance | Final glyph tracks at the deepest chambers. | Read with Axum Vision; resolves into the species' fate. |
Axum Biology | Bacterial Culture samples and overgrowth nodes. | Sampled with the Biosampler for downstream crafting. |
Crafting And Progression
The biome is a major late-early-game progression beat. Beyond the Axum Vision unlock at the connected Angel Comb site, the Alien Ruins contain resource nodes associated with the Axum technology track and unique creatures adapted to living among the structures. The biome interlocks with the Coral Gardens adjacent band and routes onward toward the deeper Sparse Plains and named Axum installations such as the Karakorum Power Plant.
Environment Design
Like the rest of the moon's biomes, the Alien Ruins are entirely handcrafted. The level design team described the environment build as using a combination of MeshBlend for seamless asset blending and the Tufa Kit pipeline for rock formations; the additional complication in this biome is the intersection of geometric Axum architecture with organic marine growth, which required additional pipeline work to keep the visual blend coherent. Specific decisions, like the placement of every inscription surface and every creature spawn point, are not procedurally generated.

Status In The Live Build
The biome is in the Early Access launch build under the in-build name Alien Ruins as established across launch-coverage walkthroughs and the dedicated community wiki's Axum and Alien Ruins pages. The older internal name Overgrown Ruins was retained on this wiki for slug-stability reasons and is added as an alias on the article. Both URL forms resolve to the same page. Further Axum lore content, additional inscription surfaces, and connected Axum installations are expected to expand here in later Early Access updates per the Early Access and Development Roadmap; the present launch-build content is already the densest lore region on the moon.
