World Tree
The World Tree is a biome on Planet Zezura in Subnautica 2. The name was discovered by community members who spotted file names visible in the background of a dev vlog video. It is one of the most evocatively named biomes on Zezura, implying a colossal organic structure, potentially a single enormous organism, that defines an entire underwater zone's ecology.
What the name suggests
"World Tree" evokes a massive biological structure forming the foundation of an entire ecosystem. In terrestrial mythology, a world tree is a cosmic tree connecting different realms. In the context of an alien ocean planet, the name suggests an underwater organic formation so large that it functions as terrain rather than just flora: other creatures, plants, and resources would exist on or within the structure rather than simply near it.
The Subnautica franchise has precedent for biomes built around massive organisms. The original game featured Reefback Leviathans (passive creatures carrying entire mini-ecosystems on their backs) and the Tree Cove (a cavern dominated by a single enormous tree). Below Zero included the Ventgarden, a 110-meter-tall jellyfish-like creature that players could swim inside. The World Tree may represent a similar concept at a biome scale: a living structure that players explore as both terrain and organism.
Discovery
The World Tree's name was identified through the same method as other Zezura biome names: file names visible on a developer's screen during a dev vlog. Community members spotted folder and asset names referencing specific biomes, and the list was shared on Reddit and the Subnautica forums. Unknown Worlds has not released official descriptions for individual biomes beyond what was shown in the vlogs.
These names come from development files and may not represent final naming. The developers stated biome names could change before or during Early Access.
Handcrafted design
Like all biomes on Zezura, the World Tree is entirely handcrafted rather than procedurally generated. Level Designer Artyom O'Rielly confirmed: "Each zone is thought through and designed by hand." The environment team uses custom tools including MeshBlend (seamless mesh blending) and the Tufa Kit pipeline (detailed rock formation creation) to build Zezura's terrain. For a biome centered on a massive organic structure, these tools would need to handle the transition between biological surfaces and surrounding geological terrain.
What remains unknown
What the World Tree actually looks like (size, shape, species)
Whether it is a single organism, a colony, or a geological formation with organic growth
Depth range and placement in Zezura's biome progression
Unique creatures and resources in the biome
Whether players explore the interior of the structure, climb its exterior, or both
Narrative or lore significance (connection to the Blight, the Architects, or the planet's ecology)
Whether the World Tree is included in the Early Access launch or planned for a post-launch update (two biomes were cut from the initial scope)
