Terraforming
March 7, 2026 at 01:40 PM
Major expansion: added terrain tool capabilities list, property unlock chain with exact costs, 3 building modes (Free-View/Character Perspective/Local View), full PC+Xbox control table, 8 paint texture types, Blueprint Library features, Cloudrest Lake and Blue Beach details, Starsand Legend rank requirements
Terraforming is a terrain editing system that lets players physically reshape the landscape of Windflute Island. Unlike the other properties where land comes pre-shaped, Windflute Island gives full control over elevation, water, paths, and garden layouts. The system runs on a custom engine that Seed Sparkle Lab built specifically for Starsand Island, supporting freeform terrain manipulation alongside the game's building and decoration tools.
On Windflute Island, players have access to a comprehensive set of terrain tools:
Shape hills: Raise terrain to create elevation changes, build hillsides, or sculpt ridgelines
Dig water features: Lower terrain to form ponds, lakes, or channels
Lay roads: Place pathways and roads across the terrain
Design gardens: Sculpt terrain for garden areas, terraced farmland, and landscaped plots
Decking and fencing: Add structural landscaping features around buildings and pathways
Banners and decorations: Place banners, cascading terrace gardens, and other decorative elements
The developers described the philosophy behind the system as "your island, your rules." Combined with the building and decoration tools, terraforming lets players build things like hillside villages, lakefront cottages, terraced farmland, or elaborate garden mazes that would be impossible on flat ground.
Full terraforming is exclusive to Windflute Island, the fourth and final unlockable property. The earlier properties do not support terrain editing:
Property | Terrain Editing | Notes |
|---|---|---|
Hopeland | No | Starter farm. Fixed terrain, but fully buildable and decoratable. |
Cloudrest Lake | No | Lakeside property. Fixed terrain with water access. |
Blue Beach | No | Coastal property near Starsand Port. Fixed terrain. |
Windflute Island | Yes | Elevated island with open sky and wind. Full terrain editing unlocked. |
All four properties support building, decoration, and landscaping features like decking and fencing. But only Windflute Island allows you to physically reshape the ground itself.
Windflute Island sits at the end of a long property progression chain. You must work through the earlier properties and Island Life Ranking milestones first:
Available from the start. Centrally located, minimizing travel to town, shops, and NPCs. Supports up to eight expansion plots with escalating costs:
Plot | Coin Cost | Starsand Cost |
|---|---|---|
1st Expansion | 2,000 | 50 |
2nd Expansion | 15,000 | 75 |
3rd Expansion | 30,000 | 100 |
4th to 8th | Escalating | Escalating (up to ~160,000 Coins and 300 Starsand for the 8th) |
Before any land expansion is possible, you must unlock the Buy Land app on your phone. This requires completing the Junior Talent task set in the Island Life Ranking system: reach Apprentice status in any profession, place six furniture items, accumulate 2,000 Coins, meet ten islanders, reach Junior level, and complete five Bulletin Board requests.
Unlocks at Island Pro rank (previously referred to as Home Builder in some sources), which requires expanding Hopeland six times and significant progress across multiple professions and community contributions. The initial purchase costs 6,000,000 Coins and 750 Starsand. Cloudrest Lake is a spacious lakeside property ideal for ranching and fishing.
Unlocks at Home Builder rank (previously referred to as Bright Star in some sources) after purchasing Cloudrest Lake. Located near Starsand Port, it is convenient for deep-sea fishing preparation and maritime activities.
Unlocks at Starsand Legend rank, the highest Island Life tier. Requirements include building 10 Crafting Stations, purchasing Blue Beach plots, and completing all prior Island Life task sets. Windflute Island is the largest available land area and serves as the endgame showcase property.
Starsand Island features three distinct construction modes that work alongside terraforming:
Mode | Description | Best For |
|---|---|---|
Free-View Building | Overhead camera with full access to walls, doors, roofs, terrain pieces, and landscaping tools | Large-scale construction, terraforming, structural building |
Character Perspective | First-person or close third-person view for interior and exterior decoration and furnishing | Interior design, furniture placement, fine-tuning decorations |
Local View | Zoomed-in view for decorating small spaces like aquariums, tabletops, and display shelves | Aquarium setups, tabletop items, detail work |
Terraforming and building share the same interface. Press C on keyboard to enter Build Mode.

Buildings can be painted with eight different texture types to create various architectural styles:
Texture | Style |
|---|---|
Wood Grain | Natural, rustic buildings |
Brick | Traditional masonry appearance |
Stone | Medieval or cottage style |
Gloss Paint | Modern, clean surfaces |
Matte Paint | Contemporary, understated finish |
Metallic | Industrial or futuristic look |
Rough/Micro Cement | Raw, unfinished aesthetic |
Ceramics | Smooth, polished surfaces |
Textures can be mixed and matched on different surfaces of the same building. Combined with terraforming, you can create period-accurate architecture on sculpted terrain for a cohesive visual theme.
The Blueprint Library lets players save, share, and download building designs. Saved blueprints capture the building's structure, object placements, decoration styles, and landscaping. Other players can download your blueprints and place them directly on their own properties.
Save blueprints: Capture your current build as a reusable template
Share blueprints: Upload designs for other players to download
Official Blueprints: Pre-designed templates available from NPCs in the game
Download and place: Import community designs and place them on your property (materials required)
Terraforming consumes materials just like regular building. Stockpile wood, stone, and other resources before starting a large project.
Use the day/night cycle adjuster in Build Mode to preview how your terrain looks under different lighting conditions before committing.
If you want to build a lakefront house, dig the water feature first. Placing buildings near water after the terrain is set avoids alignment issues.
Windflute Island is a late-game unlock. Focus on expanding Hopeland first and save terraforming ambitions for when you have the resources and rank to support them.
Use batch demolish to quickly rework large sections if a design does not work out. Experimentation is encouraged.
Combine multiple paint textures on the same building for a unique look. Wood grain walls with a stone foundation is a popular combination.
Download Official Blueprints from NPCs to get a head start on designs before customizing them to your taste.
The property unlock chain is expensive. Budget your Coins and Starsand Points carefully. Cloudrest Lake alone costs 6,000,000 Coins.
