The Nameless Ashes Case is the first major investigation in Silver Palace. It belongs to Chapter 1, Burned to Cinders, which was playable in the Monotype Beta and again in the second closed beta. Chief Inspector Lorin hands the file to the Detective over a drink at a restaurant a block from the agency, after the constabulary has worked it from several directions without a breakthrough.
The chapter title appears in circulation with two spellings, Burnt to Cinders and Burned to Cinders, and no single published rendering settles it. The case name itself is stable and is what the constabulary calls the file in dialogue.
The case turns on a single fire rather than a run of them. Several months before the Detective returns to the city, a fire broke out in an abandoned building in the sparsely populated High Peers suburbs, reported by a nearby resident who saw thick black smoke. The building's proportions mark it as a warehouse rather than a residence. The Detective never visits the site; the whole reconstruction is done from the constabulary's photographs and notes.
The scene details below come from the beta build's case transcript and describe that build's version of the investigation.
Evidence | What the Detective concludes |
|---|---|
Iron and ferrous materials showing signs of melting | A natural fire reaches around 600 degrees and iron melts at about 1,500, so the heat is beyond what a fire, or even a high-temperature Reactor, should be able to produce |
Several bodies, too badly burned to establish age or identity | No forensic route to naming the victims, which is where the case gets its name |
The bodies clustered as if seated tightly together | They were not strangers. A connection, perhaps an organisation, gathered at the site for an unknown purpose |
Cuts at least three millimetres deep forming a strange marking | The same markings as those on a bullet the Detective already knows, tying the case to the airship attack |
The fire started indoors, with pieces of a Reactor nearby | Those inside saw it start and did not put it out; the victims may have been restrained, or already dead |
Ash that does not look right | Flagged by the Detective and left unresolved in the beta build |
The reconstruction happens inside the Mindpalace, the workspace the Detective enters to think as though standing at the scene itself. Clues gathered there are combined on the Evidence Board, and the rest of the investigation system is available alongside it: crime-scene analysis, character scanning, interrogation, and the Detective's ability to sense entities moving through the city in disguise. Player choices during the investigation affect how the story unfolds, so different players reach different parts of the picture in a different order.
The markings cut into the bodies are the turn the case pivots on, because the Detective has seen them before on a bullet. That connects a warehouse fire in the suburbs to the disaster three years earlier in which one of the two S.T.A.T.S. detectives was shot and both disappeared. Official character copy describes that crash as linked to the Queen's assassination, which is what turns a cold arson file into a thread running back to Queen Feliana's court. The main story page covers the prologue that opens the same thread from the other end.
Reactor fragments at the point of origin put Silverium directly in the frame, and the temperature the scene reached is well outside what ordinary combustion explains. Whether the deaths trace to Reactor misuse, to weaponised industrial waste, or to something the beta build does not name is the open question the file leaves the Detective. The build does not resolve it, so treat any specific causal claim as unconfirmed.
Chapter 1 contains three cases, and evidence from each feeds the others:
The Nameless Ashes Case, the warehouse fire described above
Mystery of the Stolen Silver
Case of Grimm's Death, the killing of the journalist Grimm
The link between the first and third is explicit in the build. Grimm's death is an unusual murder carried out with extreme heat, a characteristic the Detective names as shared with the Nameless Ashes Case, and one body examined later is described as carbonised in the same way but without the marking. Lorin also notes that the constabulary never disclosed anything about the Nameless Ashes Case to the public, which matters when a second killing starts to look like a copy.
