First Day Walkthrough

Initial version (2026-05-27): minute-by-minute first-day walkthrough
This walkthrough covers the first in-game day in Romestead: a focused, time-budgeted path from arriving alone in the Plains to having a defensible camp and a stocked Food Storage before the first night. It maps the six tutorial quests to concrete actions and minute-by-minute targets.
By the end of day one you should have: a Workbench, an Altar, a Storage Box, a Food Storage with at least one cooked meal, the Wooden Shield recipe, and the path to the first citizen identified. The Guardian of Minerva fight is a day-three goal, not day-one.
After character creation, the game spawns you in the Plains with the "Acquiring Materials" tutorial quest.
Look at the ground. Wood Sticks and Flint Shards are scattered as world pickups; gather 6 Flint Shards and 3 Wood Sticks.
Open inventory and craft Flint Pickaxe and Flint Axe immediately. Equip the axe.
Quest completes; collect the Flint Gladius and Flint Hasta recipes from the reward.
Find a tree and chop with the Flint Axe until you have 4 Wood Planks. Stone Pine trees are common.
Tutorial Quest 2 ("Weapons and Tools") completes once you have a pickaxe, lumber axe, and equipped main-hand weapon. Equip a Flint Gladius or Flint Hasta.
Tutorial Quest 3 ("Obtain Wood Planks") completes when you have 4 Planks. Collect the Workbench recipe.
Craft the Workbench from your inventory and place it on the ground in a flat spot.
Tutorial Quest 4 ("The Workbench") completes; collect the Barricade and Campfire recipes.
Craft and place a Campfire next to the Workbench. Toss any raw meat you have on top to cook it.
Use the Workbench to craft the Altar (requires 3 Stone). Mine 3 Stone with the Flint Pickaxe and place the Altar.
Interact with the Altar and the Town Core (your spawn marker becomes the Town Core when you build).
Tutorial Quest 5 ("Town Core and Altar") completes; world quests become available.
Craft a Storage Box and place it next to the Workbench. Dump excess loot.
Craft a Food Storage and a Leatherworker building. The Leatherworker is the canonical first building because it unlocks armor crafting.
Interact with the Food Storage to register it with the settlement.
Tutorial Quest 6 ("Populating Your Town I") completes; collect the second Barricade recipe.
Place 4 Barricades around the side of camp facing open ground. This is your first night-time defense.
Watch the lighting. As the sun drops, the dead start to walk. Pull back to camp, stand near the Campfire (which gives a small heat / morale buff), and wait for the first Fallen to approach.
Use the Flint Hasta or Gladius and the Wooden Shield (craft from the Workbench if you have time).
Heavy resources you have not yet placed (lumber logs, stones) can be thrown at incoming Fallen. See Combat for the throwing mechanic.
Eat cooked meat from the Campfire if your hunger meter is low.
Do not chase enemies into the dark. Hold position by the Campfire.
After dawn, the surviving Fallen disperse. Use the morning to:
Repair any damaged Barricades.
Mine more Stone for the first Stone Wall ring.
Light campfires next to the pointing statues you find in the Plains; this will eventually mark the Guardian of Minerva nest.
Make your first offering to Minerva at the Altar; she will likely be your first restored god.
Start the Worshipping the Gods world quest if not already underway.
Wandering too far from spawn before sundown. The Plains is mostly safe, but the dark is not.
Building far from your Workbench. Keep everything within 10 to 15 meters at first.
Skipping the Altar. Three Stone is cheap, and the Altar is your quest hub from minute one.
Ignoring food. Cook anything you find; raw meat does nothing for you.
Chasing the Guardian on day one. It is a multi-day-prep fight; Feathered set is the reward.
