Comprehensive article on the camper van mechanic
The Camper Van is the heart of the Outbound experience. Unlike traditional survival games where players build a stationary base, Outbound's central mechanic is a fully customizable electric vehicle that doubles as the player's home, workshop, and mobile headquarters. Players start the game with an empty camper van shell and gradually transform it into a multi-level mobile home packed with functional stations and personal touches.
The camper van serves multiple roles simultaneously. It is the player's primary mode of transportation for traversing the open world, their living quarters for resting and cooking, their workshop for crafting and research, and their mobile farm for growing crops. Every system in the game ties back to the van in some way.
The van uses a modular building system that allows players to customize both the interior and exterior freely. Functional items include stoves, storage containers, workstations, and garden beds. Decorative items range from curtains and candles to paint jobs and furniture. Players can build on top of the van's roof as well, expanding upward to create multi-level structures.
A standout innovation is the fold-away mechanic: structures built on the van fold away compactly when the player enters driving mode, then unfold automatically when the van is parked at a campsite. This means players never have to sacrifice their base layout when they want to hit the road.
The van runs on renewable energy. It is equipped with a Bio-Burner engine and can be outfitted with solar panels, wind turbines, water generators, and biomass converters. Managing the van's power supply is a core strategic element — more advanced workstations and automated systems consume more energy, requiring players to optimize their power production setup as they progress.
Players can drive the camper van in both third-person and first-person perspectives. First-person driving provides a more immersive experience, letting players feel the scale of the world through the windshield. The van handles differently depending on the terrain and the weight of installed modules.
In co-op mode, all players share the same camper van. Friends can collaborate on building and decorating, with changes visible in real time. One player drives while others can move around inside the van, manage workstations, or enjoy the scenery from the roof.
