Added male and female Human character art
Humans are the most common race on the continent of Aêthoril and vary in disposition, motivation and aptitude almost as much as they vary in number. They are playable at Early Access launch, and they are the only race in Monsters & Memories with access to every one of the eighteen classes.
The official material treats humans less as a single people than as a spread. Where other races have one origin story and one homeland, humans have four named cultures scattered across the continent, each with its own history and its own reputation, and no text that describes a shared human nation or capital.
Two of the four trace their movements to the same event, the Second Deicidium, during which both migrated east. The name implies that a First Deicidium happened, but the official material never mentions one, so the earlier event is a gap rather than a fact.
These are lore groupings. As of September 2026 there is no indication that any of them is selectable at character creation or functions as a playable sub-race.
Culture | What the lore says |
|---|---|
The Ba'Haara | A proud seafaring people whose history dates back to the fall of Hathalia. Rumoured to align themselves with powerful supernatural forces. |
The Tarrellians | Migrated east during the Second Deicidium alongside the Ba'Haara. A powerful and noble people whose queen is rumoured to have gone mad. |
The people of Easthymn | Dour and superstitious. Their love of tradition and bureaucracy is topped only by their affinity for corruption. |
The Sojourners | Nomadic clans of wildlings, tinkerers, entertainers and travelling merchants, found throughout Aêthoril. |
Hathalia, the fallen realm the Ba'Haara date themselves from, is named once and never described. The same is true of the Second Deicidium. Both are real proper nouns in the setting and both are dead ends for now.
Male and female human portraits are used in the character creation material, but the written lore gives no physical description of humans as a race, which is consistent with the emphasis on variation. The first human character model built for the game, a beetle wrangler named Hult, was the subject of an early art update and set the art direction for the character work that followed. That story belongs to Development History rather than to the setting.

Humans have no stated homeland. They are found throughout Aêthoril, and the four cultures above are regional rather than national.
Starting location is decided by the race, faith and class combination rather than by race alone. Good and neutral combinations may begin in Night Harbor, and some neutral and evil combinations begin in The Underdocks below it. Because humans can take every class and are not restricted by disposition, they are the race most likely to start in more than one place. The developers have said these assignments will be updated before Early Access opens, so treat any specific human start as provisional. See Starting Cities for the four cities and what is confirmed about each.
The official wording is that humans can be every class, depending on start location. The qualifier is part of the sentence and matters: the class list is complete, but the route into a given class may depend on where a character begins. All eighteen classes are in the game at Early Access.
