Overview
Backlund (贝克兰德) is the imperial capital of Loen and the largest city in the world of Lord of Mysteries. Official marketing calls it 万都之都, roughly the capital of ten thousand capitals, and describes it as rained on all year round. In the source material it is the seat of the kingdom and the setting for the arcs that follow the opening.
Backlund is not in the launch build. The studio's framing is future tense: as the story develops, players are to travel to Backlund the way Klein Moretti does. It is the next major region on a published multi-year plan, not content that can be reached today, and everything below that describes a Backlund gameplay loop comes from the source material and from previews rather than from the live client.
Where Backlund Sits on the Plan
The studio has published its build-out region by region. Tingen and its Iron Cross Street are the launch content; the rest follow in stages, none of them dated.
Region | What has been published |
|---|---|
Tingen and Iron Cross Street | Live at launch. The opening region and the only fully playable city |
Backlund (贝克兰德) | Announced as the next major region. Described in official copy through its perpetual rain, its gray fog and its political intrigue |
The Forsaken Land | Announced. Described in May 2026 as being in its final stages of adjustment |
The Five Seas (五海) | Announced. Described in May 2026 as being in intensive production, and tied to the maritime side of the story |
The western continent | Named as a future plan still being coordinated and designed |
源堡 | Named in the developer's own store statement as a destination deep in the same plan. Nothing further has been published, and no English rendering has been given |
Boroughs in the Source Material
Backlund's boroughs come from the source material rather than from anything playable today. They are organised on two axes: cardinal direction and social class. The cardinal layer divides the city into North, South, East and West Boroughs; the class layer adds named districts inside them.
Borough | Class layer | What the source material gives it |
|---|---|---|
Empress Borough | Aristocratic, royal-court adjacent | Town houses of marquesses and viscounts, the imperial gardens, and the most exclusive Beyonder circles |
Cherwood Borough | Senior professional | Beyonder operatives and the largest Nighthawk facility outside the central palace district |
Hillston Borough | Upper-middle tier | Dense residential streets and a large civilian population |
St. George Borough | Working class but respectable | Trade guilds, dock workers, and low-tier Beyonder contacts |
East Borough | Industry and ports | At least twice the size of Tingen, including the Backlund docks |
North, South and West Boroughs | Mixed use | Dense districts each carrying their own anomaly density and faction footprint |
Faction Presence in the Source Material
In the source material, Backlund hosts the headquarters of the four official Beyonder organisations of the Loen Kingdom: the Nighthawks under the Church of the Evernight Goddess, the Mandated Punishers as joint-Church enforcement, the Machinery Hivemind under the Church of the God of Steam and Machinery, and MI9 as the kingdom's intelligence service. The Seven Orthodox Churches each keep their largest cathedrals in the capital. How any of this is modelled in the game, including whether reputation tracks attach to those organisations, has not been published.
Saint Selena Cathedral
The world map that shipped at launch includes a region named Saint Selena Cathedral, and the launch map material places it in Tingen, on Red Moon Street, as the Church of the Evernight Goddess's seat in that city. The source material attaches a cathedral of the same name to the imperial capital. The two placements are not the same and the shipped map is the one that governs what players can visit today.
Beyonder Densities
In the source material Backlund has the highest Beyonder density of any city in Loen. Mid-Sequence Beyonders are common, and Sequence 3 and higher Beyonders pass through frequently for cross-Church coordination, with anomaly density to match. The live game's raid content does not sit here: the named twelve-player raid at launch is May Manor's garden, in the Tingen regions. See Dungeons and Raids.
Travel From Tingen
The canonical Tingen-to-Backlund route runs by rail through the East Balam corridor, and the source material treats the journey as a set piece in its own right. How the game will move players between the two cities, and whether that rail journey becomes playable content, has not been published.
Launch Status
Backlund has appeared in real-machine footage since the closed tests, and the franchise's own rights-holder page reported in 2025 that the Backlund setting and part of the main storyline levels were complete in development. Neither of those makes it playable. Nothing in the launch client opens the city, and its campaign content, raid encounters and vendor pass have not been detailed. Read this page as a record of an announced region and of the source material behind it.
