Custom keymapping was added to InZOI in the v0.7.0 anniversary update on March 26, 2026. This quality-of-life feature allows players to rebind keyboard controls to their preferred layout through the game's Settings menu. Prior to this update, all keyboard controls were locked to their default bindings, which was one of the most frequently requested changes from the community.
The keymapping interface is found in the Settings menu under a dedicated Controls or Keybindings tab. From there, players see a list of all bindable actions alongside their current key assignments. Clicking on any action allows the player to press a new key to assign it.
A "Reset to Defaults" button restores all bindings to the original layout if the player wants to start over. Changes take effect immediately after saving.
The following are the default keyboard bindings that ship with the game:
WASD : Camera movement (pan left, forward, right, backward)
TAB : Toggle third-person view
P : Pause the game
I : Enter Build Mode
M : Open City Edit Mode / full city map
Mouse scroll : Zoom in and out
Right-click drag : Rotate the camera
Middle-click drag : Tilt the camera angle
Escape : Open the menu / cancel current action
These defaults follow the standard layout used by most simulation and strategy games, making them familiar to new players.
Nearly all gameplay controls can be remapped. Rebindable categories include:
Camera controls : Movement, rotation, zoom, and tilt
UI shortcuts : Opening specific menus, toggling overlays, and navigating panels
Build Mode : Placing objects, rotating items, undoing actions, and switching floors
Gameplay actions : Pausing, speed controls, selecting Zois, and confirming or canceling actions
City Edit Mode : Lot placement, road editing, and terrain tools
Some system-level keys (such as F11 for fullscreen and Print Screen for screenshots) may not be rebindable, as they are handled by the operating system or engine layer rather than the game.
The keymapping system supports layouts beyond the standard QWERTY arrangement. Players using AZERTY, QWERTZ, Dvorak, or other regional keyboard layouts can rebind keys to match their physical keyboard. The game detects key presses by scancode, so the displayed label may not always match the physical key on non-QWERTY layouts, but the binding itself works correctly.
In addition to keyboard rebinding, InZOI supports gamepad controllers. Controller users have a separate binding scheme that maps actions to buttons, triggers, and analog sticks. The controller layout can also be customized, though the level of granularity is somewhat more limited than keyboard rebinding.
Players can switch between keyboard and controller at any time; the game detects the active input device and displays the appropriate button prompts on screen.
If you frequently switch between gameplay and Build Mode, bind the Build Mode toggle to an easily reachable key like a thumb button or a key near WASD.
Consider binding pause and speed controls to nearby keys so you can manage game pacing without moving your hand.
After rebinding, spend a few minutes in a sandbox session to build muscle memory before jumping into a long play session.
Use the "Reset to Defaults" option if your custom layout starts to feel disorganized after many changes.
Check that your bindings do not conflict with each other; the settings menu should warn you about duplicate assignments.
