Bravo Squad is the four-Gear unit the entire campaign of Gears of War: E-Day follows. The story never leaves them, so the squad is both the cast and the camera: the player only sees what these four see.
Roster
Character | Voiced by | Role in the squad |
|---|---|---|
John DiMaggio | Pendulum Wars veteran, recently home, carrying the death of Carlos Santiago | |
Carlos Ferro | Carlos Santiago's younger brother and Marcus's closest tie to him | |
Elizabeth Ludlow | Former Gear from Kalona, the member who has seen the most combat | |
Jake Ryan Lozano | Young cadet and communications officer who never reached the front |

All four are playable from the start, and the campaign can be completed as any of them. In co-op the squad slots fill with other players, up to four online or two in split-screen on console. See Co-Op and Split-Screen for the exact limits.
How the Squad Forms
None of the four are deployed when Emergence Day begins. Marcus and Dom are at an armistice memorial in Kalona and are in a bar when the tremors start. Mags is working at the city's Imulsion Refinery. Lucas is a cadet who never made it to the war that has just ended.
The four happen to be in the same place when the road opens and Wretches pour out. Everyone around them runs the other way. All four, in plain clothes, look at each other, turn and run toward it. The team describes it as a bonding moment that happens before the characters have even met, built on a shared value and a shared instinct rather than on orders.
Front Seat and Back Seat
The studio is explicit that the two new characters were not written as second versions of Marcus and Dom. The framing used internally is front seat and back seat: Marcus and Dom sit in front, Mags and Lucas sit behind. Different roles, all of them load-bearing for the story. The stated goal for the new pair was that they had to be as compelling as the returning leads immediately, without being copies of them.
First Contact
Nothing about the Locust arrives with a playbook. The squad has no name for what they are fighting, so they give the creatures nicknames as they go, and those nicknames stick as the official names. The escalation runs through a specific sequence of realisations: these might be animals, then they might be monsters, then they are tall, they say "Die, ground walkers" and they shoot. Dom's line marking the turn is that they shoot, they make weapons and they talk.
Bravo's route through the city crosses other defenders of Kalona, including a lone Gear holding a grocery store with a Vulcan, and Tai Kaliso. Those meetings are the point where the squad stops being four people improvising and starts being part of a larger force. The enemy escalation itself is covered on Enemies.
Reporting for Duty
Once the emergence begins, Kalona's City Hall is hastily converted into a COG base of operations, part medical triage and part command centre. It is where Bravo Squad officially assembles. The four report for duty under Captain Akila Grey, who is overseeing their deployment and takes each Gear's details and next of kin.
That last question is where the squad's four histories get set out side by side.

Neither Carter nor Reyes has a name to put down, and that shared absence is what bonds the two of them. The returning pair both have someone waiting; the two new characters do not.
After City Hall the squad moves back out into the city. Securing access to a bridge is one objective, and later the squad reaches Oria Stadium, a Kalona landmark turned into a forward operating base, where it links up with Tai Kaliso and Theta Squad. A rail station near the stadium is the objective after that, and taking it turns into a brutal, multi-level fight.
