Where He Starts
Marcus is not deployed when Emergence Day begins. He and Dom are back on Sera after the Pendulum Wars ended, on a planet that has just declared peace for the first time in almost eighty years, working out what comes next after a lifetime in which war was the only condition they had known. When the first tremors hit, the pair are in a bar in plain clothes.
The grief underneath that peace is Carlos Santiago, the older brother of Dominic Santiago and Marcus's best friend, who died in combat just before the war ended. Without him, the studio describes the relationship between Marcus and Dom as distant at the start of the game. Its repair is one of the two origin stories the campaign tells.
In Plain Clothes
Designing Marcus out of armour was treated as its own problem, since the character has never been shown that way. The result keeps him unmistakable while dressing him for an evening off: a brown jacket, COG tags worn under a tight V-neck, a wallet chain, and the bandana still on, because he never takes it off.
The Lip Scar
One detail is confirmed to originate here. Marcus's lip scar is given to him by a Drone during the events of this game, so every later appearance of the character carries a mark that starts on this day. His other well-known scar is acquired in prison and therefore does not appear in this game at all.
In the Demo
Marcus features in the sequences shown publicly. He slams into the new low-ground cover as a Corpser rips through the street, slides past a planter into cover, and is choked out by a Drone in a close-quarters camera shot the team uses to show off its rebuilt character fidelity. The grocery store fight is where a bayonet snaps while he is pinned and Tai Kaliso intervenes, which is the moment that leads to the chainsaw attachment described on Weapons.
In the 2024 announce trailer he fights a Drone hand to hand, fends it off with a nearby television set, plants the Lancer into a wall to disengage its bayonet and downs the creature, before falling through the floor into an emergence hole and being pulled up by a young Dom.
Playing as Marcus
The entire campaign can be played as any of the four squad members from the start, so Marcus is an option rather than a default. Player counts and split-screen rules are on Co-Op and Split-Screen.
