Gears of War: E-Day is a third-person cover shooter developed by The Coalition, with People Can Fly as co-development partner, and published by Xbox Game Studios. It launches on October 6, 2026 for Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, cloud and Steam. The game is a prequel set fourteen years before the original Gears of War, and it covers the opening of Emergence Day, the day the Locust first broke through the surface of Sera.
E-Day was rebuilt from nothing in Unreal Engine 5. No code, no assets and no animations were carried over from earlier games in the series, and the studio describes the whole gameplay sandbox as unified across every mode, so the same movement, cover and weapon systems drive the campaign, Horde Siege and Versus.

Setting and Premise
Emergence Day is a planet-wide catastrophe, but the game deliberately narrows the lens. The whole story takes place in one city, over three days, in the fictional city of Kalona. The studio made that call early: at planetary scale the human cost stops registering, so the invasion is shown through a single place falling apart around the people who live there.
Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago are recently home from the Pendulum Wars, attending an armistice memorial in the city when the ground opens. They are not deployed and not in armour, and neither is the pair of Gears who end up beside them. The four form Bravo Squad, and the story never leaves them. There is no cutaway to another front, another squad or a command room; the player learns what the squad learns, when they learn it.
The city's command structure frames the early story. Colonel Trench, a hard-line officer, takes military command of Kalona during the emergence and clashes with the city's mayor over how far to prioritise civilians. Captain Akila Grey oversees Bravo Squad's deployment and takes each member's details and next of kin before they move out.
Campaign
The campaign is a linear experience rather than an open world, and it moves from tight fights in narrow streets and alleys out into open districts that give access to whole neighbourhoods. Larger arenas carry a couple of storeys of verticality and several routes into the same fight. All four members of Bravo Squad are playable from the start, and the campaign supports up to four players online or two players in split-screen on console. See Co-Op and Split-Screen for the exact player counts and restrictions.
The campaign is built as a series of acts, each split into chapters. The published material covers the opening of the second act, which assembles the squad at Kalona's City Hall, sends them to secure a bridge crossing and then on to Oria Stadium, a city landmark converted into a forward operating base. Optional side missions and collectibles sit off the main route. The act and chapter breakdown is on Campaign Acts and Chapters.
The campaign's antagonist is Vraahk, a Locust blight commander who came to the surface intent on destroying humanity. Boss encounters are collected on Campaign Bosses.
Multiplayer
Multiplayer splits into two pillars. Horde Siege is a twelve-player evolution of the wave-based survival mode, with three squads of four working separate missions across the same large Kalona map. Versus is 4v4 competitive play across six new maps and four launch modes, with equal starting loadouts and contested on-map power weapons.
Progression is deliberately old-school. There is no battle pass. Nearly every customisation item can be earned by playing, and the currencies, medals and level system are covered on Progression and Medals and Cosmetics and Currencies.
Gameplay Foundations
The team frames its work around four pillars: movement, cover, weapons and enemies. The most visible change sits in the first two. Gears can jump, climb and mantle for the first time in the series, and mantling no longer requires entering cover first. Sprint feeds into a slide, and a new low-ground cover type lets a Gear drop prone behind a low wall or debris.
Movement: four named principles govern the feel, covered on Movement and Cover
Gunplay: every projectile has simulated ballistics and travel time, detailed on Combat and Gunplay
Weapons: returning guns are retuned and new ones are added, listed on Weapons
Enemies: Locust units are rebuilt with new behaviours, listed on Enemies
Editions and Access
Three editions are sold digitally alongside a physical Standard Edition and a separate Collector's Edition. The Standard Edition is $69.99 and the Premium Edition is $99.99. Pre-ordering any edition grants the Exfil Dom Legendary Character Skin and the Exfil Legendary Weapon Skin Set from early access on October 1.
Multiplayer access at launch requires a Game Pass Essential membership or higher. A two-weekend Open Beta ran in August 2026 and has concluded.
Post-Launch Plans
Five themed post-launch multiplayer seasons are committed, starting with Season 1: Emergence. The updates are stated to include new maps, modes, characters, skins, Horde Siege classes and limited time events. Only the first season name has been published so far, and no season has been dated. What is committed, and what is not, is collected on Seasons and Post-Launch Content.
Trailers and Reveals
The game was revealed in June 2024 with an in-engine announce trailer. A gameplay reveal followed on June 7, 2026, with the main theme published as its own video the same day. A cinematic titled Raven Extract arrived on June 17, 2026, multiplayer was shown in detail on July 30, 2026, and a story trailer premiered on August 25, 2026. The full dated chronology is on Development History.
As of September 13, 2026 the official video channel carries twenty-two entries, of which fifteen are for this game; the other seven cover other products in the series and are not counted here. Two arrived in the week after September 6: a short piece titled Adagio and a Spanish-language version of the story trailer. The game’s store listing was refreshed on August 26, 2026, expanding its screenshot gallery from eight images to twenty-three.
