Bertrand is a character in Fire Emblem: Fortune's Weave, introduced by the arena announcer as the living legend of Dagsion and known by the epithet the White-Maned Demon. His Japanese name is ベルトラン. The epithet in Japanese is 闘技場の白髪鬼, closer to "White-Haired Demon of the Arena", and it is attached to his appearance. The clan name has been rendered both as the Mane of Flame and as the Mane of Flames; the Japanese is 炎の鬣.
Bertrand is a fixture of the Heroic Games rather than a newcomer to them. The announcer's introduction in the Direct runs: "Emerging today from the eastern gate, a man I'm sure you all recognise. Dagsion's living legend, the White-Maned Demon!" Under the strength that earned him the name, his profile describes a noble and virtuous streak, and a man who would prefer peace.
He is one of four rivals reported to have reached the final eight of the 1449 tournament, alongside Talimun, Orchel and Anatolia, with statues of all eight standing in the capital afterwards. His record has one visible dent: the assassin Cruaidín is described as beating him in the opening exhibition bout.
Bertrand is the first opponent Dietrich names on camera. In the Direct's montage of the four Heroes, Dietrich says "I have burned to duel you, White-Maned Demon," which fits a Hero who came to this continent chasing stronger opponents and stayed for the tournament. Bertrand appears as a boss on the House Lamine route.
Bertrand appears to be the man who murdered the father of Leda, and she is hunting him. This link is drawn from preview coverage and from in-game dialogue rather than from a published profile, so it should be read as strongly indicated rather than as settled. What is on record is her reaction on learning the killer is competing: "He's... alive! I will kill him." Her mentor left her a list of names before he died, and Bertrand is one of the two targets on it that have been identified so far, the other being Lechner. He is a boss on the Rose Tempest route as well as the House Lamine route.
Aswan knew Bertrand before the 1449 games and is startled to find him alive and fighting in them; her line is simply "Bertrand...you are alive." Roster listings also describe Iliana of the Order of Mithras as his guardian, though that description comes from a single roster page and nothing published explains what the relationship involves.
Bertrand is confirmed as a boss. Whether he can also be recruited is unsettled: one roster indexes him under characters who have yet to be announced as playable and flags him as potentially playable, while another lists him under recruitable units with his clanmate Dante. Nothing official has been said either way ahead of launch. See Recruitment for how rival participants are won over in general.
